I have a 10 hour stopover (1330 - 2330) in HKG next week and wondering if I should stay in the airport or head into the city.

I have been to Hong Kong once a couple of years ago for the Rugby 7's. I was there for 3 days and lets just say I don't remember much. Any ideas? I am Oneworld Sapphire - QF SG.

From memory - Hong Kong on a Stick
  • Get an HKD150 Octopus card at the airport, This has a HKD50 deposit and HKD100 credit.
  • Top it up with another HKD100 (for your Island/Kowloon public transport needs, including peak tram)
  • Travel to Central Airport Express (use Octopus card, HKD100 will be charged for the outbound - but not on your same day return)
  • Walk up to Bus stop for 12C bus (Check the HKG transit website for location, timetables)
  • Take 12C bus to "peak tram" terminus.
  • Take Peak tram to Peak.
  • Have a look around.
  • Catch 15 bus back to Central
  • Take Star Ferry across to Kowloon.
  • Have a look around,
  • head up Nathan road
  • Find a place for dinner
  • Take Star Ferry back to Central after sun set - great view of building (check times for light show)
  • Catch Airport Express back to HKG (use octopus, you should not be charged for same day return)
  • You may wish to cash your Octopus card in once you get back to the airport, you'll get remaining unspent credit + HKD50 deposit less HKD7 short term use fee.

My two suggestions

1) Take the Tram to the Peak
2) Have a ball at Ocean Park
3) Cab to Elements Shopping Centre (location of W Hong Kong Hotel)

I agree that Airport Express to Central -> Peak tram -> star ferry to Kowloon and return -> Airport Express to Airport is a good itinerary. Gives you a birds eye's view from the Peak, as well as the cheap/leisurely ferry ride across the harbour.

Moreover, there are tonnes of shopping in Tsim Sha Tsui just next to the Kowloon Star Ferry terminal if you have any spare time. Bus or MTR (subway) up to Mongkok if you like extremely crowded streets and cheap buys/electronics.

The airport express is fast and convenient. Only takes about 20-25mins from Central (HK Island) to the airport. Runs every 10-12mins i think.

If you don't want to leave Lantau Island (where the airport is located), you can always go to the Disneyland or the new outlets mall.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Thanks for the suggetions. On the subject of cheap electronics, any idea on cost of Bose noise cancelling headphones in Hong Kong?

For his first visit to HK, I'd suggest soaking up the mayhem of the Nathan Rd shopping area instead.

hi Keith....then he needs a warning about Indian gentlemen approaching him along Nathan Rd trying to sell him shirts and custom tailored suitss!!:D

Think of it as a baptism of fire. ;)
Elements is v quiet and is really for return visits or when one has gotten over the craziness - lots of v good shops at Elements tho.

mr_matt_t,

I find HK is a really great place BUT not so good for electronics any more. You really need to know your stuff before you go to make sure you are not ripped off.

Re: electronics, i would suggest going to big chains like Fortress or Broadway. They are very reliable. Not the cheapest, but competitively priced and with peace-of-mind that you are not getting grey or imitated stocks.

Though i have no idea about headphone prices or whether the stores above stock them.

Nong Ping 360 cable car to monastery depending on what time your layover is.
Cable car system is designed and built by Cairns company that did the Kuranda cable car. Worth a look and not far from the Airport.

Not for the OP but for others.....go to Broadway Stores on the outskirts (e.g. Sheung Shui) and you will find that the prices there are most negotiable and comes with a lot more freebies than the same brand stores in the city or near the city.

Maybe I'm a wuss, but it scared me quite a bit. A previous comment I've made:

"When I went a few months ago - Easter weekend early in the morning, there were no queues at all. Bought my return ticket and off I went. Cabin to myself.

It didn't help their sales for the day that it looked like it was going to rain. They put the sign up about heavy wind and possible swaying.

Off I go in the cable car that I get to myself. Sway. Sway. Sway. Decent movement of the cabin side to side. Lots of wind. Bits of rain.

I'm ok with heights, but not with fear of falling. There's a technical difference with the 2 phobias, and if you fear falling then a swaying cabin isn't the best place to be - regardless of how safe it actually is.

Arrived safely at the terminus, ended up throwing away my return ticket as the rain was starting to set in and there was no way I'd go back down that way. Instead caught the bus back down to the MTR, which was a long journey but a little less taxing on the senses!

When I got back to the MTR, there was a small queue - maybe 10 people."
