Remarkable Scenery, I know I would be wasting my time if I showed this to the better half and asked her "what about this next year"

Thank you for a great trip report. Reliving my summer 2014 trip around Iceland for 2 weeks and seeing the Winter difference. Not least of which is losing 20+ hours of daylight a day!!

Reykjavik

My final destination in Iceland was Reykjavik.

I got into Reykjavik in the early evening. RKV domestic airport is small and quite close to the city. Rather than take a taxi I walked the 3 or 4 km to the Icelandair Marina Hotel. It took a while: It was slow at times wheeling my suitcase along slushy footpaths, but it gave me a chance to have a look around. I didn’t have long there, so may as well use every moment. Reykjavik was much warmer than it had been back at Egilsstadur, and there was far less snow and ice about. Of course, it was still chilly. It was Iceland and it was mid-winter!

More Reykjavik:

The Icelandair Marina was ok. It isn’t a luxury hotel but was clean and functional. The public spaces are wonderful, ranging from a bar and restaurant to a library to random meeting nooks. Located in an former warehouse, it tries hard to be funky and happening. I guess it is. I like polished concrete, and got lots of it. The room was full of silly try-hard little signs attempting to be witty. To be honest, I’ve forgetten exactly what they said but they were a bore. Once above the toilet said something about “we know the room is tiny, so why don’t you go out to a bar and get drunk?” Yeah, whatever. ..I walked around the town a bit, had dinner at an ok restaurant.

Very clean, functional little room at the Icelandair Hotel Marina. Just lose the stupid signs, please:

Even more Reykjavik:

I had one full free day to wander around. It was a nice enough place: an impressive cathedral; an atmospheric old cemetery; an icy lake with hungry birds; lots of boats in the harbour; a mix of old and modernist architecture; nice trees all bare and skeletal, but elegant; impressive snowy hills as a backdrop to almost every view. But, for me, compared to where I’d just been it wasn’t so impressive. It wasn’t too busy, but still there were crowds of tourists about. Fair enough, I was one of them. I feel it would be ghastly in summer.

Inside the Cathedral and good views from the tower. Very windy and cold up there, even though it is enclosed.

Reyjkavik isn't all picturesque, but it is interesting.

Not saying this isn't picturesque: it is inside the cathedral tower.

Iceland and the ferry journey to get there were probably the main point of my holiday. But Iceland was by no means the only destination. As I mentioned briefly in the first post I was in Denmark. Before that I'd passed through Stockholm. Maybe more on them later.

But after Iceland my next destination was Helsinki. My early flight on Iceland Air took me via CPH. Not sure if I got any photos of the airport there, may post one if I find anything interesting. My brief stopover at CPH, just an hour or two to kill, gave me time to take advantage of my Star Alliance Gold status, courtesy of the Avianca Brazil status match. No issues getting into the very nice SAS lounge, with access to the more fancy upstairs area. Great buffet, great and wide variety of drinks including spirits. Lots of typically Scandi white and pale colours. Good wifi.

From CPH it was a short flight on SAS to Helsinki. I missed out on getting flight 666 to HEL, but only because SAS was a bit cheaper than AY.

Somewhere over Finland. It looks cold out there. That's because it was cold out there!

Helsinki was the coldest place I visited on this trip. It was a brisk -21c at the airport when I arrived. This arrival was easy and quick. A week or two earlier when I arrived from Tokyo I was given extra-special attention by a team of three customs officers who waited for me to get my bag from the carousel before swooping in and whisking me away to a side room for a very thorough search of my luggage, including removing the lining of the suitcase. The bottle of multivitamins I had was very suspicious, it seems. They were maybe disappointed that they found nothing nor any good reason to detain me any longer and, at that time, seemed grudgingly satisfied that I was going straight on to Stockholm. Oh, and apparently it was also suspicious that I'd spent an overnight stopover in Tokyo en route. Anyway, no matter. It was an interesting experience and helped pass some time. It occurs to me that I was once subjected to a similar search in Bali a year before that..

HEL airport isn't too far out of the city and I fancied that I could begin my sightseeing from a taxi, so that's how I got from airport to hotel. I stayed at the Hilton Strand. I loved it. my room wasn't huge, but the view down the frozen harbour was wonderful. I liked the setup of the room too, with the bed and desk both facing the windows. It was just really pleasant.

I have been to Helsinki before but not in winter. It was beautiful. It is also very easy to get around. At the same time as New York ground to a halt because of blizzards, Helsinki just carried on through a whiteout. There was a lot of snow about and it was very cold out, but roads and footpaths always seemed to be cleared quickly and often.

Next stop: Helsinki

From Reykjavik I flew via CPH to Helsinki. I booked the flight through SAS to take advantage of my recently acquired Avianca diamond status match. KEF-CPH was a codeshare on Icelandair metal. CPH-HEL was on an SAS 737. Not sure if I had any lounge access at KEF. I didn't have much time before my flight as it was an early morning departure. I spent some time looking at duty free shops but bought nothing, all just the usual though with an impressive array of exotic-looking booze for sale.

Nice lounge at CPH, no problems with access. I don't recall now whether I had my Avianca card at the time or not, but in any case boarding pass self-scan was sufficient for entry.

On arrival in HEL it was, as I mentioned before, very cold. My last post mentioned the very nice Hilton, so straight on to sightseeing:

I was in Helsinki at the same time as New York was being brought to its knees by heavy snow. The lack of impact the masses of snow and frequent heavy snow falls in Helskini had just goes to show how a city can deal with that if it is set up for it. Blizzard? No problem. Some of the trams were a little delayed.

It was not my first visit to Helsinki but I'd never been in winter. It was beautiful, it was less crowded than in summer, it was chilly, there was a fair bit of snow about but it was easy enough to get around, and public transport was excellent. I mostly walked or took trams. I didn't have much time and stayed in the central part of the city with one excursion out to Suomenlinna island to see the old naval fortress.
