Were they easy to get on an off eg if you were going inside could you just slip them off
To put on I slipped the toe of my shoe into the toe of the crampon and had to stretch the crampon over the heel. Easier to take off than put on. I kept an eye on others using them to work out if I needed to take them off in particular stores.

Edit: the rubber did not have a lot of give so they were a little tricky to put on if your balance was not that good.

Bought a pair of lined rain pants for hubby online via the UK for approx $30 inc delivery, quite happy with the finish as they seem well made to keep rain and wind out and easy to pack for just in case.

Ive been reading about wearing a pair of merino socks as a "sock liner" and then thicker wool socks over them for the cold.

We have lots of thick wool socks for boots but is it worth buying few merino socks as well? Looks about $20-$35 per pair for the merino and as I will book a place with a laundry, only need a couple of pairs each.

I went to Iceland last September and loved it! I took my hiking boots, but didn't wear them once, just my waterproof walking shoes, although, I didn't do any long distance, rough country walks. Most places I went to had gravel paths that were well-maintained.

By the way, there is a small bakery just down the hill from Hallgrimskirkja, not on the main street, that has the best cinnamon scrolls I have ever had. Worth a visit, if you like that sort of thing!

We're going in April so prepare for the worst and hope for the best. I still dont have waterproof shoes, was hoping to avoid boots for me as Im not hiking but leisurely toddling while hubby hikes.

The only 2 bakeries I can find are Sandhold or Braud on Laugavegur, which seems to be their 'main street'.

If you're standing in front of the cathedral, with your back to it, the street goes off slightly to your right. I think it could be Frakkastigur St. It could be Braud, they have more than one location.

Thanks. I can see a Braud in that location. Where Im thinking of staying we're about 5-10mins walk from the church, pools, bakeries (Sandholt & Braud), bus stop ect.

This is what I like to hear. I am reticent to carry boots, and I go in late July so if it is ever warm and dry that should be it. I remember reading something about a bakery near where you describe.

The bakery is only tiny, but definitely worth a visit! I think even in July you could get wet feet. They call it the land of ice and fire, but I think rocks and water would be a better name. Hundreds of waterfalls!

I have read that some people wear 2 pairs of socks. I’d probably try it at home first cos it sounds to me like the first pair would be too tight when the ‘smartwool’ ones went over the top. I’ll be just be doing the smartwool mountaineer. They are the thickest that I got in REI NY. Smartwool Mountaineer Socks. I have never had cold feet in these in CBR, Alaska, Norway etc.

PS, don’t get the bison wool socks - I found them so itchy that I wanted to get the serated bread knife to scratch.

I had a pair of waterproof Merrell shoes (not boots) in the snow in Sapporo in Feb and they were great. No wet feet at all. Quite a few puddles etc.

Thanks, I was googling waterproof shoes (not boots) and some look like fabric so I dont know if they are lined or should I go with leather.

Picked up a pair of lined snowpants for hubby for just in case/aurora chasing at night, $30 new with tags inc post via England. We can always donate/leave in Reykjavik if he doesnt use them.

Denali - I dont know if you are a 50 Shades or a Miss Marple type reader :) - but this guy might get you in the mood for Iceland -or maybe not !!

Thank you, will look them up for my Kindle.

Must get back into planning as its what, 6mths away! Got a pair of leather boots for $100 on sale so hopefully they'll do the job. Going to invest in some merino and wool socks next.

Also budgeting for private guide for overnight trip to Glacier Lagoon (east) and a different guide trip north/west. Its more a photography tour so hubby will be happy, I hired him a friend to talk lenses with. :p

For socks look at these-

Merinomink Merino Wool & Possum Fur Fine Socks

the possum fur really makes the difference -at keeping you warm. :D When my son lived in NYC I bought him a merinomink/possum fur beanie and he wore it for 7 years - he said it was the best beanie for a NY winter !!!! didnt need any other hat !

Thank you! I've been looking at a lot of socks but hesitant to buy from Kathmandu or Anaconda as the % didn't seem worth the price tag.

Can't believe I'll be hand washing socks.

Will also check out the gloves as hubby will need something warmer.

Exactly what I've been looking for, he wears fingerless now but I was looking for something to flip over/cover the full hand.

Thank you!
