IATA Blasts U.K. For Policy Shortfalls

IATA Director General Giovanni Bisignani’s roadshow made a stop in London, where the industry lobby group bemoaned a range of issues and a perceived lack of aviation policy in the U.K.

Bisignani argues that “the government’s policy pillars of excessive taxes, inefficient airport regulation and limiting growth will destroy” the U.K.’s legacy as a champion of aviation.

An issue that this week already drew criticism for British airlines is the potential sale of more of the U.K.’s stake in the NATS air traffic management consortium. Bisignani warns that “any change to the structure must be carefully considered. A golden share or keeping some of the shares for the government are options. And any change must include an effective regulatory structure that drives further efficiencies.”

I'm strangely inclined to agree with the conclusion of "excessive taxes, inefficient airport regulation and limiting growth".

I'm not really sure what our APD quid is actually doing, besides possibly lining the pockets of some fat cats.

Limiting growth is a bit here and there, because if LHR could expand then it would, but currently it's being hard limited by lobby groups. Mind you, there is no indication if expanding LHR is the optimal move anyway, irrespective of external stakeholders.

That's why I'm flying LHR-DUB-IST-CAI-DXB (all C class).

Saves heaps, which I refuse to give to the stupid British Conservative party. And I am a British citizen (not to mention also being an Australian citizen).

Smartest thing anyone can do is to fly Ryanair to a non-UK destination (no taxes) and then book onwards on an airline of your choice. Can save hundreds of dollars.

But most Australians don't care about saving money. That's why fares are so high from Australia.

Hmmm, the coalition in the UK had a policy to replace the APD with a per flight charge that could not be individually appled to PAX - I wonder what's happened to that?

Flip-flopping? Hostile parliament?
