hsbc-star-alliance-card-art.pngWhy we like the HSBC Star Alliance credit card

Launched in 2022, the HSBC Star Alliance credit card is the first of its kind anywhere in the world. You'll earn Star Alliance Points which are transferable to a choice of seven Star Alliance member airlines at a time of your choosing. You can also earn Star Alliance Silver or Gold status just by spending on the card, with no flying required!

Once you qualify for the welcome offer and are fast tracked to Star Alliance Gold status with any of the seven participating carriers, you’ll soon be enjoying perks like airport priority lanes and lounge access when flying across the whole Star Alliance network. It is the largest airline alliance in the world with 25 member airlines, including Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines, United and Turkish Airlines.

Please note that the welcome offer is not available to existing HSBC customers transferring from another HSBC credit card, or if you have previously held a HSBC Star Alliance credit card within the last 18 months. Refer to the full T&C’s for more information:

Agree this is confusing but does seem consistent with other comments that status doesnt seem to be extended earlier than the status year end date, when you hit the qualifying spend...
So it will really depend on what HSBC/Star Alliance does with our status when the cards are cancelled in November...
Im fortunate that my anniversary is mid Sept, so if I have to wait until then, so be it. Just seems counter to status from flying where it would apply once achieved.

Will mean missing out on lounge access on some NZ flights in a fortnight, d'oh!

the status should run back to back, and there might be a small grace period anyway. So hopefully you’ll have star gold without interruption.

I'm currently Silver, I had an interesting situation last year where my anniversary was only two weeks before they reduced the Spend criteria to get to Gold. I had given up getting to the $60k+ threshold and accepted that I'd drop to Silver, but If they could've set it to $48k for me, I would've spent just a little more on the card to get it over the line.

ah, i see.

which is odd because my friend - currently gold with AC through the initial $4000 spend - got an email on hitting $30k asking her to nominate an airline for star silver. She chose Krisflyer. Which was effected after two weeks. So she currently holds SQ silver and AC gold.

Card was auto cancelled after putting the card into credit accidentally. Oh well fun while it was lasted.

Called up CS and they couldnt help.

How far into credit did it go?

I actually received a warning notification about 2 weeks before. And I spent it the day after.

Was given 10 business days to use the credit which I did. But they closed the account 15 days after. No recourse.

Basically said they were closing down so nothing can be done

I think unless you get a refund which pushes the account into positive balance, paying in to give excess credit is against the terms and conditions.

Something to do with CC not being able to hold deposits.

Yep it sounded like I needed to manually refund the excess and not spend it.

Didnt push the matter as they are closing up anyway.

What I'm hearing is this would be a great way to cash out a 0% for 24m balance transfer offer with another issuer.

Well, I cancelled this card about 12 months ago but I finally found a way to use those 50K Aeroplan points - booked a SYD-HND in Y with ANA for next Jan. I'm almost surprised it was ticketed as I'd had trouble even booking hotels with Aeroplan - they had cancelled a few on me earlier. So I guess 2c a point, better than nothing

We used our Aeroplan points for MEL-ICN-NRT-ICN-MEL in Y for two on Asiana in March / April this year. Two lots of 50k from two sign-up bonuses as well as points that we earned while we held the card (and family sharing - that took a lot of effort to get set up because it was around the time of auto-banning accounts where AC found any account that happened to have the same first / last name and a different address, as well as the "pause" on family sharing that went on for years, or so it seemed).

Our goal was Japan, but we couldn't find flights to Japan for the available points on the dates we wanted to go; they all showed 12-14 hour layovers in ICN.

When we realised that splitting the itinerary in Seoul only added 16,000 points to the total for the trip, and MEL-ICN and ICN-NRT availability was a lot better, it was easy to book. MEL-ICN return had heaps of availability, as did ICN-NRT (both legs A380, both legs seated lower deck on booking, but checked into economy upper deck at T-80).

Adding a stopover in INC should only have added 5000 points per person, or multiples of 5k for more than one pax.

35k in economy + 5k or 60k + 5k in business. The return if straight through just 35/65.
