hsbc-star-alliance-card-art.pngWhy we like the HSBC Star Alliance credit card

Launched in 2022, the HSBC Star Alliance credit card is the first of its kind anywhere in the world. You'll earn Star Alliance Points which are transferable to a choice of seven Star Alliance member airlines at a time of your choosing. You can also earn Star Alliance Silver or Gold status just by spending on the card, with no flying required!

Once you qualify for the welcome offer and are fast tracked to Star Alliance Gold status with any of the seven participating carriers, you’ll soon be enjoying perks like airport priority lanes and lounge access when flying across the whole Star Alliance network. It is the largest airline alliance in the world with 25 member airlines, including Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines, United and Turkish Airlines.

Please note that the welcome offer is not available to existing HSBC customers transferring from another HSBC credit card, or if you have previously held a HSBC Star Alliance credit card within the last 18 months. Refer to the full T&C’s for more information:

Agree this is confusing but does seem consistent with other comments that status doesnt seem to be extended earlier than the status year end date, when you hit the qualifying spend...
So it will really depend on what HSBC/Star Alliance does with our status when the cards are cancelled in November...
Im fortunate that my anniversary is mid Sept, so if I have to wait until then, so be it. Just seems counter to status from flying where it would apply once achieved.

Will mean missing out on lounge access on some NZ flights in a fortnight, d'oh!

the status should run back to back, and there might be a small grace period anyway. So hopefully you’ll have star gold without interruption.

I'm currently Silver, I had an interesting situation last year where my anniversary was only two weeks before they reduced the Spend criteria to get to Gold. I had given up getting to the $60k+ threshold and accepted that I'd drop to Silver, but If they could've set it to $48k for me, I would've spent just a little more on the card to get it over the line.

ah, i see.

which is odd because my friend - currently gold with AC through the initial $4000 spend - got an email on hitting $30k asking her to nominate an airline for star silver. She chose Krisflyer. Which was effected after two weeks. So she currently holds SQ silver and AC gold.
