How will the falling dollar effect your travel plans

I've run some calculations and based on the AUD dropping as low as USD0.60, GBP0.40 and EUR0.50 I should still be able to have a comfortable DONE4 holiday next year.

It might affect the level of accommodation I am able to afford but should still be able to avoid backpackers.

We are very fortunate to do a 4/5 week trip every 18 mths and a 1 week trip every year so I am always plotting and planning into the future. When the USD and the Euro were good value, I stocked up on cash and trav chqs for future trips - this will help to average out the cost for future accom/flights and we'll use the cash on the ground for meals etc. We've also suffered the 48c/$1 US trip.

I budget for every trip, we get good mileage out of our FF points and we offset some of the costs by staying in apartments and self catering (mainly breakfasts) as we don't enjoy eating out for every meal.

I will always find the money to travel, my sanity depends on it - I'll just have to come up with more creative ways to keep the costs down if the FX is not in our favour.

Would the airfares be adversely affected by the falling Aussie dollar ?

Thinking of EK, SQ, MH and the like

Are they USD based or just on their own currencies ?

Thanks

I like your thinking! So many places on my list!

I am interested in an answer to this also.

I am planning to book my annual CNS - LAX - CNS on UA next month. Prices generally hover around $1000-1400 rtn depending on flight deals. As the USD gets stronger against the $A i am assuming flights will become more expensive for us.

Time will tell.

Wouldn't they get cheaper because demand is lower?

Possibly, but lets just say 1 $US = 0.5 $a a $1000A flight is only worth $500 to an american company. Might not we worth their while. I havnt seen any history to determine what the prices were back in 2008 when we were at about this rate.

Loaded up my wallet with extra funds taking into consideration the lower AUD.

Expect the AUD to make some sort of resurgence next week.

I know in 2009 flights were pretty cheap, but no idea about 2008.

I think its only in recent years that anyone gave much thought to the exchange rate when planning travel. When you decide to go on a holiday, then you just bite the bullet. A favourable exchange rate is simply the icing on the cake. And it isnt all that bad yet anyway. My most frequent memory of the USD is around 72 cents and I still halve when I think of British pounds!

Remember the US$ @ .55 against the AUD around ' 96
I used my American Credit Cards to get by living in Sydney. I was iunfree fall culture shock at the cost of living.....

With the pound falling and the Aussie dollar bounce do we have anyone for the cricket?

Yep we did a big family trip to the USA in '96. Just looked at prices and doubled it.
And still lots of shoes, books and clothing were much cheaper than Oz.

For flights, basically won't impact at all. I am still pegged to the same FIFO schedule which dictates my travel dates. Mostly booking MH ex DEL. I am paid in GBP:), purchase tickets priced in INR:-| with a credit card in AUD:(. While the INR has depreciated against the MYR over the last 6 months the ticket price in INR has remained pretty constant. I presume airlines hedge a lot.

For holidays again little impact. AUD depreciation against USD is about 15% in last couple of months which doesn't impact on my travel plan thoughts a lot. If it kept going down, obviously it would make holidaying in AU cheaper and more attractive Our next holiday, booked a couple months ago, is to HAN as it looked like better value than CNS, even with an airfare for Mrs P ex AU. Obviously very different destinations but relative cost played a role in the choice at the time.

Cheers skip

It hasn't been good in terms of spending $USD to pay for the tickets directly from the airline. Award bookings haven't been so bad, but 0.90 sure hurts a lot when you're spending over 4k each for paid tickets.

I know in 2009 flights were pretty cheap, but no idea about 2008.

A ticket MEL-LAX was under $1100, brought about 5 weeks before our November departure. I used points and the taxes etc only cost $400 MEL-NYC return, same flight now is over $900 in taxes.

I have a number of trips planned over the next six months where I'll need about 4 different currencies. I've been travelling for most of my life and this is the first time I had ever considered getting at cash passport. Guess I'll see if it was worth it!
