Re: Hello

Hello my name is Barbara & am wondering how I can use my FF Qantas points to travel return to KL as they do not go there direct
Welcome to AFF Barbara.

Perhaps a question in the Your Questions or Qantas Frequent Flyer forum would have been more appropriate.

As for using your QFF points to get to KUL there are 2 options.

1) Book an award ticket to SIN and then pay for a cheap Air Asia flight to KUL.
2) Book an award ticket to KUL on CX via HKG. It will require more QFF points and taxes and surcharges.

Easiest to go on the QFF website and try out the various routes available.

In terms of a classic award, there is not much aside from trying to go to SIN, and then a cheapy upto KUL as johnK has suggested.

Other than that, an Anyseat award would possibly give you some options (such as a 3K or MH flight from SIN-KUL), but this will be at a higher point cost.

Well, you could fly SYD-Bangkok on either QF or BA, and then you could fly BKK-KUL on RJ.
The connections are not good, but you could spend the night in BKK.

I've never redeemed a RJ flight, but I'd expect there to be available seats on that route.

If you are not in a hurry, I would go to SIN and then drive to KUL on the freeway or catch the train.

You're much braver than I am. Driving in Malaysia is a death wish IMHO. Especially if you are driving at night with all the drugged up truck drivers.

Only did it once, that was many years ago.
You're right, Only drive mid week during daylight hours.

too many stories about having to have bribe money at the ready for when they pull you over and tell you that you were speeding.

I completed a paid trip to KL, booked via the QF website, in Jan 2009 and it certainly was not straightforward.

I eventually flew MEL-PER, then PER-SIN, and finally Jetstar Asia PER-KUL. I took the PER route to avoid having to overnight in SIN. QF77 lands at SIN in time to connect with Jetstar Asia.

My luggage was checked through to KL from MEL, but they could not issue a boarding pass for the Jetstar Asia flight. when I arrived in SIN there was no Jetstar Asia desk open to issue the BP. It was eventually issued at the gate after a protracted call to QF. The Jetstar Asia groundstaff would not believe my bags had been checked through and only did so when they saw the baggage receipt.

On the return journey I had to clear customs and collect luggage at SIN and then check in again.

In the end it was worth it because it went a fair way to helping me re-qualify WP in a difficult travel year (GFC and all that!) for me, but I certainly wouldn't be doing that unless I had to.

I used paid tickets in April 2010 (Malaysian F1 and was also Easter weekend) and had QF PER-SIN then booked on a MH flight SIN -KUL. Return was SQ KUL-SIN. Interlined the whole way, no problems but of course no FF points or SC on the SIN/KUL vv legs. Given the alternative was MH or AA the entire way direct, this was the best OneWorld option - BKK RJ detour and overnight would have meant missing the F1 race. Plus, J points upgrade PER-SIN rtn into Skybed :) I must say its very hard going from QF J into MH Y which is like a bus for the SIN-KUL leg!

Surely with EK selling one-way MEL-KUL fares for $390, this route would be a no-go zone for any redemption?

Train takes a relatively long time. The other option is the bus, there are a plethora of buses doing the route, many of which of are equipped with business class style seating, 3 across with heaps of leg room (and some even 2 across), looped entertainment system showing a range of channels and some have wifi. Just avoid the bus if travelling around weekends (fri pm, sat am) as border crossing can take 1-2 hours. Scenery gets a bit boring though, continuous palm oil plantations.

I have just booked a BNE-SIN award, with the plan to then fly either 3K or AK SIN-KUL, only about $50 per pax.
