How to make enemies...! [by weighing carry-on]

A few observations and a question.

• QF seemed to be targeting wheeled bags, no weighing of back packs.

Question time - are QF enforcing this on international flights.

Awesome to note, my carryon is a backpack, and usually weighs ~20kg or more (diving kit, half of it is legally not allowed to be checked in (batteries) half is sensitive kit, camera housing/dome and rebreather head.

I too wonder re the question, since i'm literally moving house internationally with QF in October!

I have been weighed multiple times now in Canberra,Melbourne, Adelaide, and Sydney. First weighed in Melbourne on 3/1. Definitely it is wheelie bags that are targeted. You are fine to have 2 carry on bags provided each weighs under 7 kg.

I used to take all I needed for 1-3 nights in a single Samsonite Lite Biz roller, which weighed in around 9.5 kg. I now take a laptop bag as well and split the load between them. Even though my roller bag is 55cm, there hasn’t been an issue with this 2 bag set up, has been weighed 2 times now. They don’t even weigh the laptop bag, just the roller.

I preferred to have one bag, but taking 2 instead isn’t a big deal to stay HLO.

No weighing on SYD-HKG A380 or HKG-SYD last weekend and no weighing on Mel-Syd-Mel. I did ask the flight supervisor while waiting for the aerobridge to connect in Melb what the deal was with carryon gate. She said it was being pushed by CASA due to the fact that there was an increase in FA injuries closing overhead bins, in particular the push up type. Apparently there is a directive that the push up type must be closed by 2 flight attendants now according to the CSM I was chatting with. Haven't seen that as yet.

Isn't the average weight of a Western adult male around 88kgs now? That's only marginally over.

I laugh when I see the average weight of ~68kgs used in most elevators. Yeah right.

No line and no enforcement at the adjacent regular queue so I just ducked through there.

Weighing MEL-BNE yesterday evening. The flight was already 10 minutes late, and this just made it another 20 minutes late. I'd be glad to see QF's on-time-departure stats lately. Flight wasn't even full. Old 737-800 overhead lockers. Targeting wheelie bags only. A P1 got on late with a wheelie and massively large tote bag over-flowing with stuff. I'd bet others around that person who had their single wheelie taken off them would be none too impressed. Sure, both may have been <7kgs, but it's how it looks that is annoying. Lady in front of me had it taken at 9.5 kgs. Keeping in mind that Qantas Group airlines allow purchase of up to 10kgs, I really don't view it as a safety issue.

No weighing BNE-CNS on B717 Qantaslink service later that evening.

Weighing on todays 453 SYD-MEL operated by an A330. I went the non-premium queue and again avoided being weighed. One guy was kicking off in full DYKWIA style.

10/10 to Qantas for not weighting my hand luggage this past weekend. Two flights, 1 international and 1 domestic, and I estimate it to be 11kg.. Flew through Sydney immigration and customs and was on the bus in 10 min from landing....

Noticed the premium lane having their wheelie bags weighed ex Adelaide last week. I offered up my backpack but they weren't interested as apparently they could tell by the way I was carrying it that the weight was OK. Probably sound logic as 7 kg in a small backpack is uncomfortably heavy.
One pax was seriously upset about being weighed and I was privileged to be sitting in the row immediately in front whilst he discussed the matter with an extremely competent FA. I was genuinely impressed with her handling of the discussion, given his DYKWIA approach. One of the best defusings I've witnessed.
Bottom line was 7kg maximum per individual bag. He was J and entitled to two @ 7 kg but he had one @ 10 kg. Had he discussed, they would have given him a plastic bag to off load 3 kg but he took an alternative approach and had had to surrender his 10 kg bag as checked luggage or not fly. Don't think he was happy but it finished with him apologising for causing a problem. Impressively well handled!

Commenced boarding on time (6:10) and boarding finally concluded at ~6:40...around 15 mins late on pushback pretty much exclusively due to the weighing.

Full 737 but standard (non pivot) bins.

Have had this FA weighing previously. He is a zealot who was apparently on the committee pushing it or something. Took great pleasure in pointing out to everyone who was over that the 7kg limit had been written on the sign for 20 years.

Wonder if they’ll start boarding earlier to maintain their OTD figures. Would think the additional turnaround time will be costing them quite a lot.

I've come to the conclusion that I'm in favour of the weighing. No enemy here! Recently, I'm finding it much easier to put my humble backpack in the lockers. Possibly coincidence?

I agree in principle.
If it’s going to create delays then that needs to to be sorted. And not to be seen weighing premium lines only, and in our case, making the premium lane cross over the general lane to get to the weighing device. It’s clumsy. Weigh before boarding call and tags put on those bags that look heavy but come in under 7 kilos.
