Isn't "open jaw" just a series of one way tix?

No its priced almost like a return ticket and it has a one point of origin but 2 destinations. You dont have to start at the origin but ay any one of the open jay destinations

So something like

SYD-SIN // HKG-SYD (in which case start and finish at an origin)

Or

HKG-SFO // SFO-SYD (start and finish at one of the open jay destinations)

but a HKG-SFO // LAX-SYD are technically not open jaws but im not sure if the overall price would be like an open jaw - depends on having one airline service all the ports.

in January I booked through a TA a (J class) PEK-SFO // SFO-SYD for about $100 more than a PEK-SFO one way

Through a TA much is possible but I want to know if this is possible via an airline web (their multicity engines just books one ways) or is there a way to get visibility before going to a TA

Many airlines and online travel agents have multi city booking tools that can be used to book open jaws. Of course it does depend on fare rules that often don’t allow open jaws across regions (eg MEL-LHR/NYC-MEL) may not be allowed as an jaw , but MEL-LHR/FRA-MEL) may be. However, the programming may not pick up all the fares that a TA could find.

As dajop says - just use the multi-city tool. Most airlines offer this direct on their site. On-line agents also offer it, and so does googleflights.

Also as dajop points out, not all routes will be available for open-jaw. Unfortunately the recent fares on China Airlines - just $4200 to either the US or Europe didn't allow AU-USA and then a return EU-AU :(

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

As above, if the airline has a ‘multi-city’ option, try your luck. There’s a chance that not all combos are possible or will price like a return.

ITA Matrix is useful also.

An obvious good use for OJ fares is into the UK but out of mainland Euro to avoid the gauging from APD!

Have an old friend wants to fly around the world in Y and travel by land between some cities open jaw?.

Yes, you can use a RTW ticket in some cases and make your own way (a 'surface sector') between various points. Some RTWs actually require it (for example Singapore Airlines used to have a RTW flying in to New York, and out of LAX IIRC, and you had to make your own way between the two. Virgin used to have something similar, flying VA/VS but own way coast-to-coast in the USA). Just need to pick the product and combo that suits.
