How often is your card compromised by fraudsters?

Only once, thankfully. I was living in Edinburgh at the time (ah the days, 3 points per dollar on overseas transactions how I miss the OLD ANZ Qantas Visa card), I went to pay for fuel and the card was declined. Checked online and about $5K had been racked up the previous day at various petrol stations around the London ring road (M1 is it?). Food, clothes, booze. Took nearly 3 months to get all the money back, even though I could prove I was at work in Edinburgh when the card was being using in London. Seems that I had been skimmed at a restaurant, and I am now FAR more careful about making sure my cards never leave my sight.

twice in the last year
about 5 grand on a westpac card. Some merchant in Japan. The bank didn't pick it up, but there were no problems with repaying the money after I filled in all the paperwork
And just last week my brand Qantas CU card was used in Saudi Arabia. The transaction was disallowed and every contact number and email address I had given was swamped with messages (good on Qantas CU I say).
I cut the card up then and there and am awaiting the new one. Absolutely no idea how the details could have been obtained. The bank rep said that sometimes it's as crude as random number generators.
But watch your statements like a hawk

I spoke too soon.

My first paper statement from QSCU has arrived. there are 5 transactions that weren't me before the one that rang the alarm bells. Total about $350. cough*

I see lots of paperwork coming

Normally I would pick these up straight away but being a new card I am yet to master the internet access

3 times in the last month. All within Oz
Backpackers Employment Redcliffe $550 and $395
East West Media Surfers Paradise $354

Citi have refunded the disputed money already whilst they investigate:) Other than that there was one many years ago on a westpac visa

Never for me so far (thankfully). Dad's had his replaced (due to fraud) about 4 times in 3 years.

Just had my brand new citi card compromised again, twice in a month.

Sucks so bad to have this happen - 3-5 business days for card, then another 3-5 for a new pin#. Some days I have 10 transactions on this card. I feel naked without it.

I'e had my mastercard and visa compromised within the last 3 months. Especially strange as my mastercard is never ever used, as i have it as a backup for my visa.

a few months clear now since my Qantas CU experience. I watch my statements like a hawk

Hardly ever.

A number of years ago there were a couple of cab charges that looked suspicious as I used my card for some late night cabs. They could not provide any evidence of the charges and Amex refunded my money.

It looks like a couple of politicians may have tried that scam too.

Once - last year in Vienna, we noticed some activity happening in South America. Got onto the bank, they fixed the problem. They may also have reversed a couple of the Austrian charges. :)

My December MC statement had a $1000 transaction with Acer Computers. I disputed the transaction and it has been removed from my account. New card has been issued.

First time that this has ever happened to me.

Out credit card was hacked and charges made from a UK online betting agency. We contacted the agency and they told us to log in to our account and cancel it. But we didn't have an online account to do that. Contacted mab and they took the report. Same thing happened again next month. For $480 each time. Contacted NAB this time and they said we should cancel the agency account. We asked nab to cancel the credit card and grudgingly for some reason, they did so. We got all the money back.

Next time something happened we were in the Qantas Club awaiting our international flight for a month overseas. The 28 degree card had been used for all accommodation as a pre authority. 28 degrees rang me and cancelled on the spot as they detected two fraudulent charges made the night before. For tableware and a heater of all things. I was totally stressed as the credit card had been preloaded and used for accom. Kudos to 28 degrees though as they couriered me a card four days later to our hotel in Paris.

Your credit card was not hacked, but either a device you use was, or a device/database used by your vendor was, or an employee in the vendors you use noted it down and used it for online betting. There's a remote possibility the scheme had a problem too (remembering the mass card reissue MasterCard did a few years ago).

This is a very good reason to NOT use the 28 Degrees card in this way to obtain cash. Instead, use Citibank Plus (it's fees are equally zero) and NEVER give the card number to anyone. Use the 28 Degreea as it's designed and you never have to worry about not being able to get cash overseas.

Didn't the preauths on your 28 Degrees Card eat into your press posited cash anyway?

This was a personal NAB card not accessed by anyone by my husband. Vendor? I have no idea what you mean by that. The card is just used for normal purchases for things like credit card purchases.

Yes the cash was on the new 28 card but when you get a phone call within an hour of boarding you are not thinking of that.

Generic term meaning store/airline/agent/etc.

I have had my first credit card potentialy compromised this month, a Visa card with very low credit limit threw up a statement with a weird looking Taxi charge on it, thanks to this forum I am now very wary of using credit cards in taxi cabs, it was used in a taxi that day but the statement looked so strange that I called the bank back and cancelled it anyway.... better to be safe than sorry. And my own stupid fault.

But agree with other people whom have posted that only "disposable" credit cards should be used online, if you have doubts or concerns about computer and data security, unless you are in a more secure environment like the QF website for instance.
