So news.com.au has posted another "gem" Getting into holiday mode take four days and eight hours | News.com.au

They are claiming it take 4 days before the "average" person can truly start relaxing on holiday.

As someone who likes to take a lot of short breaks, and with limited exception does not like to be in any one place for very long on holiday, I find I can start into holiday mode from the moment I leave work at 5pm the day before leaving. (Often I find holiday mode kicks in from lunchtime the day before)

So can you switch off and go into holiday mode from the moment you arrive? Or does it take you nearly a week before you feel you can start relaxing?

Most definitely a week before one switches off. I am self employed so not sure if it is different for others... You can almost hear the sighs at day 7

I'm into it straight away. Husband, who is flat out at work generally works on the flight up. It takes him I'd say, five days. A 7 day holiday doesn't really work for him, 10 days is a minimum. Self employed.

I'm with Mardi, in fact once I'm in the lounge I'm relatively settled, but definitely feeling good on the plane, especially if a premium cabin. :)

I think it very much depends on what you do for a living. I suspect the greater the work responsibility the longer it takes to get into holiday mode, well that is how it has been for me.

As soon as I leave work for the last time before the holiday. Of course it helps if you don't get too hung up about work. ;)

And if you have a job that as soon as you exit the premises you don't think about it until the next day then I'm sure it would take a nano second to enter holiday mode. Maybe even in that mode well before you leave work.

Our first limo ride last month got us in the mood even before the lounge.
Now how to learn to switch off from AFF...

I usually work until the last minute before going on holiday, even in the lounge before the flight. But when I sit on the plane and switch off my mobile, then I finally relax and get on my holiday mood.

I have a little routine where the last thing I do is set up my "Out of office" email replies, leave work and as soon as I hit the boomgate at the car park I am no longer at work and its holiday time.

I count down to my last shift at work and generally within the last hour I feel in holiday mode.

The night before is when it generally hits. If its a couple of months that we'll be away it generally takes a couple of weeks before we get into the slow travel swing of things.

+1 ..........

That is a very big variable with many different input factors. I think the ideal person/situation would have one totally relaxed and with full confidence in whomever was left in charge, but I know from a family member's experience it does not always work out that way.

I start winding down the minute the flights are booked! By the time we are in the airport lounge I'm in full party mode. That's just how we roll...

I think you are correct, it is a big variable, and for me the developments in communications over the last twenty years has not helped. I have to admit to bringing things on myself when I take a holiday, the temptation to check 'numbers' or look at specific issues is difficult to resist.

Holiday - what is a Holiday? Self Employed, and doubt I have had a 24 hour period I have not worked in some shape or form in the past 14 years. I have time during some days that I am not working, some of them happen to occur when I am overseas. The only time in the past 20 years that I have switched off my cell phone is during flights.

Same $#!t - different day.
