Purchased a policy from RAC in WA for 67 day trip. Top cover, duo, no excess, aged in 60's. As a long standing member asked for a discount and got it. Paid $959 . Told them at the time I may need to extend it. A few days ago I asked them to extend it for 3 days, making it a 70 day trip. I was expecting a small amount extra to pay. Was told it would be $219.00.

I asked how they arrived at that figure and they said that it was priced in 7 day increments. So looking at the calendar, I saw that I had actually paid for 70 days already as my trip was now exactly 10 weeks = 70 days. No way they said - my trip was for 2 months, 1 week and 1 day and that one day took me into a new 7 day bracket.

I tested by getting an online quote for a 67 day trip and a 70 day trip and the result returned EXACTLY the same quote which bears out the statement that it is priced in 7 day increments. They refuse to budge. Took it to Consumer Affairs and they say they can do nothing.

So a 70 day trip can be priced in different ways and they choose the higher figure! I had assumed that it would be based on the number of days one was away, not the number of months and weeks and days as months can have a different number of days.

I feel very hard done by and feel ripped off.

You cannot extend a travel policy, you have to buy a new one with the RAC. I would suggest the difference is the cancellation fee of the old policy.

I did it last year with RAC no problem. I think I paid another $40 for the extension. One of the on-line sellers even lets you extend online - I can't remember now which one it was.

If you read the PDS it specifically states you cannot do it.

Rating on the policy would not be done on a daily basis. It will be in bands and perhaps those bands are a week apart as the length of the trip increases.

Same for car insurance. You might find that for a market value of $16,000-$22,000 you are paying the same premium and as soon as you $1 over you hit the next band and premium shoots up.

Yes - it is an absolute minefield comparing different policies. Live and learn. My gripe is that they told me it was done in 7 day increments and my extra days seemingly have already been paid for, fitting into the last 7 day increment. If as has been pointed out it is not possible to "extend" a policy, I do feel that should have been mentioned at the time I was discussing the possibility of having to extend, which was before I purchased. Next year I think I will go for an on-line company.
Thanks for replies.

I think they would counter with the fact that it is up to you to read the PDS before you decided on purchasing the policy.

If it's one thing I have learned in life and that is to stay away from anyone in insurance.

They don't care. When they tell you they care and how they are there to help you, then don't believe them. All they care about is how to make money.

P.S. you do see it differently when you experience it first hand....
