was trying to upgrade my daughter to econ x using points, we are flying business (yes i managed to snaffle 2 business rewards seats each way on my newest booking :) ) melb to la....they are telling me 24,900 for econ x or 18,000 for prem economy.......how in the heck does that work out, the guy even went off and double checked, i initially though he said 4,900 each for econ x until he tried to take nearly 50k points from my account.
also any way to upgrade our delta leg? (jfk to la on the way home under a virgin booking) im told it cant be done by both virgin and delta but surely it can......at the moment we are just booked in as economy as reward seat only covered the la - melb portion of the trip.

forgot to say daughter has been booked in economy hence why im trying to get her econ x at least...

Econ X is purely a cash addon $199 and the equivalent velocity point conversion is about 25000. Very poor use of points. It’s not essentially a upgrade, anyone can buy it with cash or points regardless of status level.

So $200 or you would probably be better off blowing 18000 points for PE.

Premium economy way better than economy x. I recently flew Economy X from syd to Lax. Premium is like the old business class and small cabin. Economy x is basically more leg room and you get served first. Go Premium if it works out cheaper

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Better to pay cash upgrade for EconX. I’d rather use the points for Premium Econ

Re JFK-LAX on DL. It is not possible to upgrade that leg. DL could as it is seat inventory inventory. VA cannot as it is not their seat inventory. There is an upgrade list on every flight where the demand exceeds the supply of upgrades - you need to be high level status on DL to snare one of those. DL will upgrade those first rather than a VA passenger
If you bought a separate DL ticket and you had DL status there is a possibility but not with VA.

The only possibility is that VA velocity gold and above can apply to be waitlisted to be upgraded from economy to comfort plus (which is economy with a little more leg room - sort of like EconX)

Just to clarify: you must be a Velocity Gold or Platinum member to be eligible for a PE or Business points upgrade on a long haul flight. Also, you must be travelling on the same itinerary (which I think you are not, as you mentioned you are travelling in different classes). Lastly, Your daughter must have purchased a full Y fare or equivalent (Flexi Fare).

Alternatively, it is possible to purchase (or points redeem) the Economy X upgrade from any fare (including reward seats), regardless of your status. But that's as far forward as they'll let you go if the above criteria is not met.

Hope this makes sense :)
