Travelling long from Mel to Hamburg on Emirates 406, with my wife and 2 year-old daughter.

In some forum (like Boeing 777 versus Airbus A340) ppl talk about flight comfort being inferior to boeing 777.

those who have flown in both, plz shed some info!

I f flying EK the A340-500 is most definately a better product than the 777's.

Having flown the A340-300, A340-500 and 777-200 er I really havent noticed that much difference between any of them in the air.

2nd'd. The EK 777 are 3-4-3 which sucks mightily (worse than 747).
The EK 350 are 2-4-2 in Y, so if you are travelling as a couple and snag a window/aisle pair - it makes for a pleasant flight (for Y :). That is the best thing about the airbus long haul product IMO - couples generally get seated with one on an aisle.
I look forward to seeing how the 380 stacks up.

3-4-3 in a 777 is going to really suck i would imagine.

Most 777's are 3-3-3 with some being 2-5-2

Yes 2-5-2, sounds bad in the missing but in reality only 1 person in a row has to climb over 2 other poor people and has a choice of what side they climb over, but in 3-3-3 2 people have to climb over 2 others to get out and well they really have only 1 way they can do it, towards the middle, since openeing a windows is not so practical ;)

Anyway never flown an A340 i don't think but same as an A330 with a couple of extra engines on the same wing ... more or less anyway... (just generally here, not specifics)

I welcome your opinion on the 2-5-2 after you've flown in the middle of the 5 for about 9 hours. For me it was The... Worst... Flight... Ever...

Since done the 3-3-3 and it was considerably more pleasant. Something psychologically 'nicer' about being only 1 away from an aisle or with a window.

Also it may have been the difference between UA and SQ as well :)

Do not disagree at all, i am sure it is psychologically nicer.... of course i have only ever had isle seats so never had that concern, and i would even take the last isle seat in the cabin over being trapped in !

What i was really getting at is any config that seats 9 across should be better than a config that seats 10 across. But the actual figures are not a lot different for seat width, i guess the isles are smaller and the seats closer to windows or the arm rests smaller, never flown on a 10 across 777 so can't comment from expereince.

On some sectors where there are lots of couples flying 2-5-2 results in having to split less of them up as well.

3-4-3 on an A340 is not much fun either! Lucky it was only a 2 hour flight BKK-SIN on Swiss Airlines after the AY flight was cancelled.

I think you are right. Sorry. Looking back through my notes for the yet unfinished trip report it does appear to be 2-4-2 but I had an aisle seat in the centre section and it did feel very cramped.

I concur with your psychological point - 2-5-2 is madness. LAX-JFK on TWA L-1011 was terrible - back row centre. Even though it was 17 years ago - never again.

Funny how these thoughts linger when other, more important ones don't :!:
