How does non-stoppver transit in US work (eg, SYD/LAX/Canada)

And US airlines are well aware of checking baggage through... but just as you can't do that arriving from overseas in SYD and going on to another domestic destination - so you can't in the USA when going on to ANY destination.. not a whole lot of difference IMO

EXCEPT that arriving at LAX (fr'instance) with bags that are tagged right through one can use the "Bag drop" just outside Customs to get baggage back into the system..

Try THAT at SYD when making a domestic connection!

And BTW.. visa or not, you are subject to the immigration officers subjectivity everywhere.... not just in the USA...

I am sorry, but I was never able to book through my luggage or have it tagged to either N.Y. or Guatemala, but was always able to do so and collecting it at destination when travelling from Sydney to Russia, Austria, Hungary or Finland via London.

Btw.: Guatemala is not a domestic destination from LAX.

I am not certain, but I think that if anybody has a valid visa to Australia or none from NZ, unless he is carrying dope or hidden arms or a bomb or two, he will be able to land in Sydney. On the other hand I recall the journalist from Australia who arrived in LA with a tourist visa and 'confessed' that while on a visit he might interview people he meets, upon which he was handcuffed, arrested, kept locked up until taken to the next Australia bound plane and deported.

America is keen to increase their tourist dollars and it would be to their advantage if they would have a look at the 21st Century security arrangements at Bangkok, Inchon, Hong Kong or Beijing and their efficient way of passenger handling.
