Hi All,

Just wondering what does everyone here use their miles for?

1. redeem for Y awards domestically
2. redeem for J awards domestically
3. redeem for international Y/W/J on VA
4. redeem for international Y/J on partner airlines

Also do you guys use points+pay tax or full awards so no taxes needs to be paid.

For me, it's Y on domestic.

Cheers,
K.

Thanks. Do you pay for the tax or do you fork out the extra points and cover the taxes?

it varies. Normally try to pay the taxes with the points as I just hate giving any cash to airlines :) but have paid taxes with a credit card a couple of times

Preference is to redeem on international J rewards on VA or partners but my family is getting bigger on me and I just redeemed in Y so i can i take the whole brood to Europe this year. I basically want one family trip somewhere interesting each year.

Oh, and tend to pay the taxes in cash.

Domestic J reward with points and pay.

+1 here.

But in peak time I redeem for Y, for example doing MEL-BNE-MEL this long weekend and was going to cost me $800+ due to late notice but flying Y up and J back.

Preference for me is J International awards with Etihad. Fantastic redemptions on the dates I usually need and quite low points. I normally do points plus pay which is around $50 in taxes. Spent almost 400,000 VA points on Etihad rewards in the last year.

I've done a few J's and a few Y's domestically - always used points to cover the taxes - probably not the most efficient but had 300k+ points so figured may as well use them

Actually flying up to Cairns this arvo on Reward J :)

The most points I spend goes on J reward international, but the most frequent thing I do is use points to upgrade from flexi to J on coast to coast. I tend to pay taxes in $$ rather than use points.

Intl J rewards for me & Mrs D-H, and the odd domestic J upgrade on longer sectors for work. Tend to pay the taxes in cash.

For leisure domestic travel (more than 2hrs) we use the Virgin CC to get 2-for-1 flexis and upgrade using the comps as we are both Plat.
We recently booked MEL-CNS-MEL in J for both us for $620. That's good value...

i just cashed a whole heap of mine in on some partner reward seats in april: LAX-SFO (VX Main Cabin Select :)), SFO-CUN (VX First :p!) and MSY-LAX (DL Y :-|).

would have booked Y for all, but the higher classes were the only reward seats available on VX (SUCH a disappointment ;)).

used points for the fares and card for taxes - barely any taxes though (~$50?), so i'm pretty damn happy.

Thanks for the responses. Do you think it's worth to do an upgrade for syd to mel and syd to ool?

I wouldn't say so, particularly if you can get row 3. I've flown Mel-bne j about 6 times and flew row 3 yesterday... And to be honest it was fine!

However... I am flying J back on monday because its the only flight I could get!

I upgrade every VA flight I take, but in truth if I didn't earn more than I spend I wouldn't bother on short legs like MEL-SYD and SYD-OOL.
