How does Accor treat you as an Elite guest?

Whatever. Like I said, its the actual customer experience that counts, in Sofitels globally, not who is pushing the paper in one country or region.

That would be a surprise. M Galleries being more of 'bespoke' characteristics, 'telling the local story' type of thing. I know that's not consistently the thing, but if they were to re-brand to MGallery, you'd think they'd not choose a glass tower in the Adelaide CBD (which is an excellent Sofitel, IMHO).

Broadbeach? Sure - very Surfers.
Not so much as a MGallery but talk around an Adelaide rebrand potentially in the next couple of years.
Funnily enough one rumour was rebranding it to a Pullman and the Pullman rebranding to a Novotel but who knows 🤷‍♂️

It also depends on suite types etc

Receive an upgrade to the next room category, if available at time of check-in. Excludes villas, one-of-a-kind suites, speciality suites and presidential suites.
If unavailable, the hotel will seek to allocate you an enhanced room in your current room category i.e. a higher floor, more desirable view, corner room or better amenities.

As a Diamond though that was very poor by the hotel and I’d definitely be complaining

Ill write a report at the end but this is now 2/2 Mercure hotels in Italy that have "upgraded" me to a bigger room. The more interesting part of the upgrade is giving us free mini bar (albeit mainly soft drinks and sparkling water).

A tale of two Sydney Sofitels in Sydney.

Had to attend a conference on Thursday at the Sofitel Darling Harbour, and being a holiday in Brisbane on Wednesday, made a 4 night break out of it flying in at leisure and using 2 Stay plus - moving between the two properties to do so. Some specific requirements meant some things worked in, and others were a bit of a miss.

Due to the conference activities Club access at Darling Harbour was not worth the (considerable) price - so booked without. Was a stay plus booking, and added breakfast. Quirk is that even when selecting breakfast on the booking, it is not included for the stay plus night This is a bit of a cheap gotcha, but not a concern in this case, as the breakfast not included morning coincides with the conference - which was providing breakfast anyway.

No upgrade offered, even though rooms available - not too concerned, as arrived in the afternoon, off for a walk and then dinner, and conference all day the next day,, so not too concerned with the size of the room, and we had booked the view.

The plan was conference Thursday, remote work Friday, then a weekend. Would be working (x 2 people) from a room - so the idea was to book the Junior suite at the Wentworth for the space, and the booking offered a guaranteed 10am check in for $200 - which we took - taking the early check in gamble away, so not testing that benefit As meetings turned out, had one from 10::00 - 11:00 after some earlier ones, so asked on the morning at Darling Harbour for 11:15 checkout. which was eventually granted as 11:30.

Arrived at Sofitel Wentworth about 11:30 - so be given the Prestige Suite all ready to go.

Observations on the Club lounge at the Wentworth for a Friday and Saturday afternoon and evening. Afternoon tea on both days well organised, plenty of food, and attentive tea and barista coffee etc. no problem. On the other hand, canapes and evening drinks - a complete shambles. Food very unappealing and not replenished. Not enough tables and waits for them - but the service a real disaster. No one approaching the table, so approach the bar - to be rudely told that if we had a table, they would not serve me, and wait for some one to take an order from the table. Had to grab someone, who stated that the table was not in their section, but obliged. Chatting later, she said that she was agency (not staff), they had 4 or 5 people there, and there was only one person at the bar to do all the drinks - and not keeping up. The drinks are Ok - when you can get them, but was not a great experience. Breakfast and afternoon tea - great, evening drinks, not worth it.

Room upgraded/type: Eventually - see review below. / Junior Suite
Early check in/late out: Arrived at 21:30 so not required / Check Out - 14:00 requested and given.
Welcome drink: Yes, didn't bother redeeming.,
Welcome amenity: 1 bottle of red wine, and fresh fruit platter
Recommend: Yes - but be wary of supposed "upgrades".

I really like the style of this hotel.
The rooms are elegant and the restaurant is gorgeous.
I had a very pleasant surprise checking in.
A young gentleman greeted me with "bonsoir" as is usual chez Sofitel.
I replied with "bonsoir" but added "sadly I suppose that is the end of our conversation in French".
He replied, in French, that he was French.
So we continued and completed the check-in entirely in French.

He mentioned that I had been "upgraded" to a Luxury Room with Club Millésime access.
I replied that the Club access was not an upgrade for me, as I have club access with my status, regardless of room type.
He agreed.

When I went to the room I was a bit disappointed as it seemed small.
Also, it wasn't a corner room, as I had booked, and lacked the feeling of spaciousness the two walls of windows would have provided.
I used the ALL app to try to make another booking for the same nights.
The Luxury Room was being offered for slightly less than a Deluxe Room (without Club access).
So much for the "upgrade".

I went back to reception to discuss the situation.
On the way I passed the young French gentleman who was finishing his shift.
I was pleased that I didn't have to raise a complaint with him and ruin the pleasant experience.

Initially they tried to insist that they had given me a meaningful upgrade.
However, after a lot of back and forth, they relented and upgraded me to a Junior Suite.
This was an amazing suite and I really enjoyed staying there.

The restaurant was also fabulous although the menu is very short so you couldn't eat there too often.
This didn't seem to bother most guests as almost everyone at other tables was eating pepper steak.
The signature Garcon Bleu coughtail was very pleasant.

Overall the experience was very good.
The one caveat I would make is that reception is very understaffed, often with only one person working.
There is no independent conciergerie, so this can be a problem.
I had to wait 10 minutes to collect my bags, with an Uber waiting to whisk me away to the airport.

Thank you for the tip: I will avoid the Sofitel Thalassa hotel & Spa in Quiberon,
Have you tried the Sofitel in Marseille Vieux Port?
Just tripped over your post, esseeeayeenn.
Yes, we stayed at Sofitel Marseille Vieux Port in late 2024, for five nights.

They were in the midst of renovations at the time - much needed, I would say, as the unrenovated sections were looking a little unloved.
Our room was spacious, comfortable, well equipped and had a large balcony overlooking the water and the spectacular surrounds. The balcony was unrenovated and far from glamorous but a superb setting, and a great place for morning coffee or an evening drink.

We found the hotel's location to be great for our needs. Walkable to lots of places, and bus stops a few steps from the hotel for longer rides, with taxis readily available, and an amusing ferry service across the old port water.

Did not try their formal restaurant as there were heaps of non-hotel restaurants to try around town, but did have excellent drinks and bar snacks one evening, overlooking the harbour. One other evening, after a long day of walking, we opted for the easy option of a casual meal at their ground floor restaurant. Dreadful, on both the food and service levels! But could have been an aberration, I suppose.

Staff were generally friendly and helpful, and some went out of their way to add to a pleasant stay.

Loved the city, both its historic sites and the recent additions. Wonderful architecture and good museums and the like. We ventured to the end of several commuter bus lines, and saw the variety of the city's history and development.

Hope you enjoy it all, too.

Property: Pullman East Melbourne (formerly Pullman on the Park)

Room booked: Cheapest base room
Room upgraded/type: Upgraded to Executive King, 20th floor
Rate: ~$900 for the 4-night stay
Early check in/late out: Early check-in not required, checked in Thursday evening. 12pm late checkout, no later needed.
Free internet: Yes
Welcome drink: Yes, two glasses of Chandon, though almost anything off the main wine list could be chosen
Welcome amenity: Jar of nuts, caramelised and a bit too sweet, would have preferred plain

This is my second stay at this hotel and we’ll definitely be back. Lovely room, beautiful views over the MCG from the 20th floor. It’s a good alternative when the Sofitel Melbourne is fully booked or $$$, I do love the Sofitel too, this is just a great option in its own right.

The lounge experience was very good. . Both Friday and Saturday nights were very busy, and Saturday night was extremely packed and like a roaring pub due to multiple footy games on at the MCG, with people turned away. We had to get there 20 to 30 minutes before drinks began just to secure a table on those nights. Sunday night was a different story, quiet and relaxing with the lounge only about a third full. Worth knowing if you’re planning a stay, Friday and Saturday nights need early arrival, Sunday you can take your time.

Breakfast was very good, a little step up from your standard buffet. Bread from a local bakery, fresh pastries, and barista made coffee.

A personal highlight was Saturday night in the lounge. We got chatting with some other guests whose friends couldn’t make it, and ended up joining them in the members area for the Collingwood versus Hawthorn match. Nail biter of a game that unfortunately ended in a draw.

Overall a great stay and we’ll definitely keep coming back to this hotel.

Booked 2 rooms for 2 pax over 3 nights at Sofitel Wentworth (Accor+ Gold). App has only given me 1 welcome drink. Bit stingey, no? If we spent less and were in the same room there'd be two drink vouchers.

The benefits only extend to the status-holder’s room.

The pro tip (except where the second guest is charged extra) is to book the first room for two guests. I did that with the Wentworth and my Sydney-based friend and I were both able to avail ourselves of the welcome drink and the lounge (as I’m platinum).

Sometimes you need to push back on the staff.
I think if you are spending upwards of $30k or even more you are entitled to push your case for a decent upgrade 🤣
Fair enough, imo. I was very shy at the Sofitel Brisbane (Gold) to ask where my welcome gift was... and I'm glad I did, because I eventually received it and really, it is an advertised status benefit PLUS a five star hotel. I have noticed Accor's status benefits can often run on a 'subject of availability' logic or there is so much variation at the individual hotel level. Understandable in some regards, less so in others.

I usually do book a room for two people but for my sole use just to get the bonus drink. But on this ocassion it was an ALL package including breakfast for which I'd have been slugged a lot extra for a second person had I done that.

I'd try and sweet talk them at check-in only they have those bloody tablet check-ins only at Wentworth, right?

Ah, this is a perk of being Platinum (along with breakfast), as you can check in in the lounge…
