Hey all

As the title suggest how are you all storing your wine, wine fridge, wine room, cellar ect...

Have started to collect more wine than the rack above the fridge will hold so started looking at options to start holding more as well as keeping it cooler than Perth summers.

kinda feel like I'm in a rabbit hole at the moment, the more you read the more insane and expensive it's getting.

Looking to see what others have done before I pull the pin on a fridge or building a damn room
.

Thanks.

Racks in the pantry for 'quaffers' and cheaper bottles, takes about 4 cases. Small wine fridge for Rockford BP, better Penfolds (about 30 bottles max).

If you want to keep wine for a long time then:
a) out of direct sunlight (wine fridges etc will have a UV light coating on their glass doors, so that's an exception)
b) try to keep vibration free (don't store in a regular fridge, or on top of one - wine fridges are designed to vibrate less than a regular fridge)
c) try to keep the temperature constant (i.e. no sharp fluctuations day-to-day). Doesn't need to be cold.

about 50% of cellar at private storage (Kennards)
20% at home - wine fridge and dark cool alcove under house
30% underground at parent's place

too many bottles

Welcome aboard pc79,

too many bottles is subjective..... Mine are also spread out a little

For those of you who do store it at home not in a wine fridge, how do you keep it cool, just insulation or do you actually run a dedicated AC in there

I live in a cooler part of Oz, the bottles that are not on a WF are in internal rooms except some that are going to be consumed in the next 1-2 years that are stored in a brick garage type of structure.

Large Vintec at home, small (Penfolds promotion) Vintec at home (manly for champagne etc) another small Vintec at the office for over flow from home.
large fridge (no freezer space) for drink now wines , beer etc. Struggling to find more space ATM as Mrs GPH has bought in a few extra dozens for the Festive season.
i suspect I shan't need to buy more for a while :). Up here in QLD , cool constant temperature storage is a must

When I lived in Sydney I used a commercial wine storage facility; now I'm in Tas I keep the wine in their cartons in a closed off space under the stairs. Thermometer there reveals very little intra or inter day temperature fluctuation in the air, so in cartons would be fine, too.

Better stuff at the back, on the bottom, out of easy reach , quaffing stuff at the front.

Welcome to AFF pc79. :)

All stored in the one room at home (about 50% in racks, 50% still in cartons), which has a ceiling fan that I run constantly during warmer times of the year, and then AC for when it gets really hot. We're in Coffs Habour so it's not too bad. We've also just recently installed insulation in the roof which is making a difference.

Have 2 wine fridges that store 60 bottles total, which is where I put the ones that I'm planning on keeping for the long haul. Would like more fridge space ideally but think Mrs667 isn't too keen!

Thanks for the welcomes all.

Percentages yes. A little more detail, which gives the indication of a small problem.

220bottle Leibherr at home in garage (14.5degrees), plus an alcove next to garage with some racking for about 200bottles, and shelving for other bits and pieces (alcove fluctuates betw 18-25 throughout the year with minimal day to day fluctuation). The alcove mostly used to store drink now bits and pieces, never had anything heat affected.
Unlimited space in underground storage at folks place incl a 150bottle industrial metal wine rack, another 48 bottle lock up rack + 4x shelves around 3m long. Temp fluctuates betw 16 and 22 there.
2x 36 case lockers at Kennards. Climate controlled constant 13.5-14.5 degrees.

not all at capacity which is a good thing, or a bad thing depending on the way you look at it.

I keep the everyday stuff at home in bottom of cupboard in coolest part of the house on tile floors....

My wine for keeping 5 - 10 yrs is in storage ( like Kennards )

Wow, thats quite the collection.

Wow, thats quite the collection.

I think there's a few people here who have collections in the thousands of bottles :)

In terms of your earlier question re insulation vs. air con: this really depends on how long you want to keep your bottles for. The warmer the termperature, the faster your wine will develop. If you want to keep something for 10+ years, then keeping the temp nice and stable (and relatively cool) becomes much more important. By cool, I mean 15 degrees or so. If you just want to keep it for 5 years, then a place that doesn't get over the low 20s will probably be fine.

Thanks for that, still seems like quite a large number for me and don't see myself ever going above a few hundred (I say that now).

My collection is scattered throughout the house in various cool locations. Our current residence is two stories, and the bottom story stays reasonably cool all year round with the help of air conditioning. I have 150 or so ready-to-drink bottles in a rack in the pantry. Most of the rest of the collection is stored in various cupboards in different rooms. According to my thermometer the day/night temperature variation is fairly minimal, even if there is a bit of seasonal variation. The really good stuff is stored in styrofoam wine boxes to further even out any temperature variation.

We are currently planning to rebuild our house that was lost in a bushfire three years ago. We are hoping to include a bespoke cellar in the rebuild, in the centre of the house, with proper climate control.
