In the other thread, there was a story of a bloke who had been signed up to QFF as a kid and had taken a trip back in 1998. He hadn't earned any more points since then until a family member transferred points to him. They have then been cancelled within 11 weeks due to inactivity on the account. His account had deemed to be "alive" during that period.

Now there is the other thread to discuss the whys and where falls of that action, but it got me thinking, how do you actually cease to be a QFF member?

The T&Cs talks about how Qantas can suspend or terminate a membership, and that membership automatically terminates on death. But short of dying, does every other member stay a member for ever?

Makes a bit of a mockery of the 9.6 million members they claim. A fair portion have probably forgotten they are a member and Qantas has no active email or postal address, and any points that have been earned have expired.

You cancel by providing written notice:
5.9 Members may, at any time, cancel their Membership by providing written notice to Qantas. Cancelling Membership will also terminate Qantas Cash and clause 16 of the PDS shall apply. Note: Due to administrative constraints, upon receipt of a written notice under clause 5.9, Qantas will cancel the relevant Membership and all accumulated Points in that Member's account will immediately expire. Accordingly, Qantas recommends that Members carefully plan all cancellations to avoid unintentional loss of accumulated Points.

So the OP's original contention is probably valid. Any number of inactive or expired Members. (Would an Administrator bother to write and advise of a Member's death? Maybe a professional Administrator might, but not a family member / friend type of Administrator I would think).

It's very much in QF's commercial interest to maintain a high number of 'members' (ie attractiveness of its points to potential partners).

Although sometimes in the crowded QPs you can believe that the ~9+ mill members are still flying, every day!

QF will have data on how many members have had activity in the last 18 months and what the expected points expiry will be per month.

Sure; in expiring the points they dispose of the liability, but they keep the asset (a 'member' who would be marketed to partners, although the member may not have a pulse :) )

But seriously, no doubt partners get data on member's profiles and types of activity (or not), but I'm sure "about 10 million members" has a nice ring to it - especially when QFF is floated to the wood ducks via a stock exchange float!

Sure ... but I can just about guarantee there are not about to publish such specific information ...

There will be IF they float QFF - there will, or should be, a whole lot of very juicy information in the Prospectus.

I expect the AFF thread "Floating of QFF" will go into meltdown with the new facts & figures available.

QFF will have records of the historical activity on all the accounts. This will clearly identify who is a valuable customer and who might have carked it in 1982 or who flies SQ, CX, J* etc

QFF won't know anything about my SQ flights.

Oops...of course not...my bad...

...but any OW flight you claimed QFF points and credits from, or redeemed QFF points to fly on they will know about...

But if you fly ex-SIN on 3K every now and then, and have AU dom flights every now and then... well, you have to get between SIN and AU somehow... and I think QF would have enough data to work it out.

Some years ago when Patricks was on the market there was juicy information about Virgin, including how much US$$ per year was paid to the bearded one to use the Virgin brand name. Patricks had a 62% shareholding in VirginBlue(DJ) at the time

I don't want anything to do with you anymore. You can also keep the ******* toaster, I always hated it.
