Just thought I'd create a thread for this - looking back over the last year, I thought I'd done a thread here as well as on Priority Club.

Btw, a pretty late review but:

Property: West Hotel Sydney, Curio Collection by Hilton
Status: Diamond
Room booked: King Acacia Room
Rate: Honors Discount (New Years Eve, booked late so it was steep)
Received: King Banksia Deluxe

  • Booked an overnight stay for the fireworks display. Upgraded to the King Banksia Deluxe on arrival. Thankfully the room was already prepared even though I came in 30 minutes before the check in time.
  • Decent view of Darling Harbour in the distance as I got a room on that side of the hotel.
  • As per Diamond amenities water bottles and snacks were already prepared. Water bottles stored in a small fridge provided.
  • New Years Eve so there was a decent buzz in the hotel, and people having dinner at Solander.
  • Like other people's experiences in this hotel I got free continental breakfast as a Diamond member. Opted to not upgrade to the full hot breakfast for $10. Mainly went for Muesli, pre-prepared coffee, yoghurt and fruit. Then decided to check out a bit early.

We found this property rather underwhelming, especially when compared to the "proper" Hilton in Sydney and other Curios around the world. Biggest problem is the fact that they only got four suites in the entire hotel so you virtually never get an upgrade (we were lucky one time and got an upgrade mid way through our stay as the staff had pity with us and all our belongings coming back from overseas).

Unfortunately, all the regular rooms are super tiny- like shoe box tiny. A "generous" upgrade to a half Darling Harbour view room- well, yea, better than the motorway view rooms you might otherwise get which are truly awful. But it's still nothing to write home about, especially given the 200+ properties in Sydney that give you better views than that.

Agree - stayed once when it opened, never returned. Tiny cramped rooms, dark and really shoddy cheap construction, doors weren’t sealed properly, thin walls etc.

When I stayed my elite benefit was a bottle of water (1). Breakfast looked so average I found a tourist trap cafe in Barangaroo that was better :)

Perhaps they built the rooms deliberately small so people would stop referring to the Hilton SYD room's as shoe boxes. Rooms must be Ibis size if they're and smaller than the Hilton SYD rooms!

Ibis sized pretty much describes the rooms at the West Hotel Curio Collection by Hilton (what a mouthful of a name btw). Just in pitch black dark rather.

Thing is at the "proper" Hilton, if you have status, you usually get an upgrade to something better than their standard shoe boxes. We always got an oversized room or even a suite when staying there (now having moved back to Sydney it's unlikely to happen again any time soon).

I did a mattress run at the Hilton and I recall thinking it was quite a decent size room on a very high floor - I wasn’t there very long however.

Admittedly it's been a good couple of years since I've stayed at the H-SYD Sydney, but in probably about 10 stays over the previous 6 or 7 years as both gold and diamond, I've only once been upgraded to better than a shoe box.

The old Hilton South Wharf did better with upgrades. I just booked some nights in Melbourne last week and didn't both with Hilton's as gold. Neither property there seemed appealing. Lack of EL at the Hilton didn't help. So in the end just booked the base room at the Sofitel as an Accor Plus Silver. At least I know the room is a decent size.

We stayed so many times at Hilton South Wharf and had some great upgrades. Loved the EL. Agree with you Daver6…looking at Accor and hyatt for melbourne stays

Hyatt only in Melbourne for me, not a single cough property. Love the brand spanking Hyatt Centric, exactly our kind of hotel and decently priced even. Thye're treating us like gods being Globalists and I love the modern style of the property- it's quickly turning into our "home from home" in Melbourne.

Also the lack of Hilton in Canberra isn't helping.

I did look at the Hyatt's but was a bit rushed and didn't have the time to thoroughly look into it. I'm a Hyatt nothing and having stayed at the Sofitel before, it was a known quantity.

I wonder when Hilton will open something in Canberra?

So far there is news of a potential Waldorf Astoria in Circular Quay when the new building is finished, a HGI in Kingswood, a normal Hilton in Parramatta and another HGI in Spring Hill Brisbane. Nothing for Canberra as plans fell through. Thats all I know for potential future Hiltons in Australia.

That Waldorf Astoria is one of the most exciting new properties in Australia imho, alongside the Andaz not far from there which has also been announced.

I vaguely recall there was some talk, just prior to Covid, about some new building somewhere that would house a Hilton.
There was a 2019 pitch to develop one. Nothing heard since Covid… 😔

Well, with mattress runs, everything other than achieving a stay/night would pale into insignificance. 😉

Property: Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam
Status: Diamond
Room Booked: King Superior Room
Rate : 3 weekend certificates (11Mar2022 - 14Mar2022)
Received: King Grand Premier with Canal Views

Great place to stay as part of our honeymoon. We received a 5 level upgrade from base room with views overlooking the canal. Provided bubbles and snacks upon entering the room.

All amenities were Aesop-branded in this room (base rooms get Salvatore Ferragamo). Service was great and everyone you met greeted you.

Gym and pool are open 24/7 however you needed to inform front desk if you were using the pool between 9pm - 7am as entrance is via the Spa service.

Sadly the points costs has increased from 95k to 110k but would still highly recommend this hotel.

Anyone stayed at the Fiji Hilton beach resort? - How do they treat the Diamonds?

I've read the flyertalk forum and it looks like upgrades are fairly standard. Does it also have the happy hour coughtails/drinks + canapes for Diamond (similar to Bali) there as well?

We stayed a few years ago. Yes, got upgraded to a large Beachfront suite room. Full breakfast. Don’t recall a “happy hour”.

It’s quite expansive (spread out up and down the beachfront) but I quite enjoyed staying there as a Denarau option.
