Wow...now there's a staffer who needs to be trained, but I really doubt HSW would be lax in training, so probably one that needs to be shown the door.

Not so sure of this. I still remember, years later, being at HSW and asking the front desk for a turndown as I went out - I only asked because in recent times (then) they had stopped doing it. Front desk didn't know what I was talking about and sent me to the concierge who is just across from the front desk. He looked blankly at me and I had to describe exactly what a turn down was at most hotels and what my expectation was. He said he'd never heard of such a thing before (!!). So, geez, at a 5 star hotel, ... never heard of a turndown ...

Anyway, it didn't come ... probably the room staff didn't know what it was either :) :) :)

As I recall this was within a year of Brett Christ having moved on as GM, a _lot_ of the staff that he'd brought with him to open the new hotel seemed to have also left at this time and a bunch of fresh (untrained??) faces had appeared.

That's pretty scary, to think they dropped so far so quickly. I do find the turndown does vary but I usually get some version of it!

Property: H Syd
Room Booked: King Deluxe Plus
Room Received: King Deluxe Plus with Lounge Access (Hotel fully booked so no upgrades but lounge access given)
Status: Gold.

As for bottle water, you can come grab some thats here... The usual 2 bottles were waiting in the room, then room service delivered a note claiming to have tried to deliver a "VIP Amenity".. Naturally I got a little excited so asked to have it sent back up.. What do you know, more water...

Buzz, it's Mount Franklin, so surely it's more expensive? :D
Jokes aside, the water business at HSYD is very inconsistent, one time I received 4 bottles in the room, half the time none. It's become my routine now to just ask for them at the EL. As for turndown service, they are much more consistent than HSW. The only time I've ever missed turndown is when I checked in after 5pm as housekeeping probably printed the list of rooms to service earlier than that.

All Cairns rooms are standard size except the suites however due to the building shape, there are smaller rooms and bigger rooms which does make the on-line check-in a benefit as you can pick the marginally bigger room or better still, a corner room with the additional window. An upgrade most commonly is to the 9th floor (executive floor) which as diamond is not really an upgrade except it makes lounge access easier. A few times of late, I've noticed my upgrade has been an 8th floor relaxation room, which although a lower grade than an exec. room upgrade, for a diamond, it actually is a better deal as the room is a bit nicer with a spa bath and separate shower rather than a shub and glass looking out to the room rather than a wall, (just makes it seem bigger). Rarely is an upgrade to a suite given (although I have had them). My assessment of H-CNS is fairly simple. One doesn't go there to be blown away by the stunning hotel (it's not awful, just average....but a better average than any other CNS hotel I've stayed in), but the staff do look after me very well, they are very accommodating and I feel comfortable staying there.

Totally agree swanning_it. have stayed there many times( but not as many as you). the staff make or break this place.

Feel free to vent your spleen! all info is good info that helps the rest of us.

It's just a series of events over the last 12 months.

High room rates, lack of upgrades, getting charged for coffee, $72 a night to park the car, small rooms.

The room I'm currently in stunk of smoke and had a running toilet all night. The following morning I asked at the EL to be moved - no apology offered but was told my luggage would be moved to a new room. Specifically asked for a new room on the same level (39) to be close to my colleagues (both rooms in my name).

Went to work and came back around 10pm. Went to the front desk and was told my new room was on the 27th floor. Not only was this not the floor I'd asked for, but would of been a downgrade from the fake upgrade to an Executive Room that I'd received on Check-in. Not the sort of service recovery I was expecting given the engineering issues.

I ended up back in the room I'd asked to be moved from...at least the toilet had been fixed.

Emailed the HH Rep referenced on the Diamond welcome letter, wasn't looking for anything, and didn't ask, but was offered 10,000 HH points.

The location is great, but for the cost, I can get a much better experience at other hotels in Syd - I don't think I'll be back.

Positives, bottles of water in both rooms, and turn down service.

An interesting upgrade for mrsdrron at Hilton Nassau.
Only silver so upgrade to exec floor was unexpected.
But then the kicker-of course the exec lounge is closed this weekend.
Fortunately on a rate with brekkie, internet, late checkout and double points.

summary of recent stays in europe

Hilton Gatwick. arrived after midnight. room in 'new' wing was quiet nice. Cheap rate - less then 100pound for 3 of us. early breakfast before lounge opened - full breakfast x3 and lots of coffees - no extra charges. happy to stay there again

Hilton Athens. upgraded 2 basic rooms to suites though neither had a view of the acropolis. Great beds and big bathrooms with big/deep baths. Delightful staff in lounge. Had tried to check in downstairs at reception but was given card for the elevator and advised to check in the lounge.Evening drinks and canapés were excellent.4 full breakfasts downstairs again with lots of coffees - no extra charge. hectic day of 'touring' was complemented by afternoon drinks around the excellent pool - very good staff there too. great stay

Hilton Molino Stucky venice . rewards stay again. 2 basic rooms upgraded to water view rooms. excellent staff. excellent stay.

Recent stay at the hilton islington has been marked as "late cancellation", even though I stayed there. Why is there always an issue with posting points with this stupid company?

Make sure you keep a copy of the receipt. I'm also waiting for an under-awarded amount of about 10k points. I'm reserving judgement about whether or not it's likely intentional or unlikely intentional.

AusBT have reviewed the Parmelia today and were quite kind to it.

I'm a tech spaz and can't fling the link over on my iPad but it's there now on Australian Business Traveller - Unbiased business travel news, reviews and advice. Your essential resource for flights, airports, hotels and frequent flyer rewards

I don't mind the Parmelia. I find the rooms very Austen Powers.

Anyhow, I'm off to Hobart tomorrow and if ever a city needed a decent hotel, Hobart's it. A place on the pier like in Auckland. A decent internationally branded hotel and an Emirates flight and Hobart would rock ahead.
