Hi, does anyone understand how to intepret this QF5 seat map? Why are there so many seats blocked? Who are they reserved for?

I've often wondered about blocked seats.

I'm on a flight BNE-LAX on friday and I've checked a couple of times since I booked the ticket and always heaps of seats blocked. I though I read somewhere once it had to do with codeshare flights or something as well? Or that impacted it? or maybe its just late at night and I made that up...

I am not sure if this is will help explain things, last time we took a Qantas flight to Singapore 2 of the party were Qantas Club members and the third was not. The booking for the 3rd person was made separately. When we looked at seating a few days before not a lot was available, when we did on line check for 2 of the party we re selected great seats that had not appeared before (2 out of an empty row of 4 seats in the forward cabin) when we did online check in for the third person the empty seats were blocked. Later in the Club Lounge we questioned this and were told these seats are reserved for club members and other people will not be able to view them.

Had you linked the bookings prior to OLCI, the third (non-QF Club Member) would have been able to access the same seat map as the other two so you'l all be able to sit together.

Often good forward seats appear the day before because this is when pax waitlisted for points upgrades are done, so if a couple of WP's had first row of economy these would become available the moment these pax are confirmed in J.

My Hubby who is Gold Club member can see free seats that I as a silver club member cannot. I always makre sure my bookings are linked with his so that I get dragged up to his member level. He always points out to me that I sit in the middle seat when I travel with him as it is usually spare:shock: when I dont!

Not sure how to interpret the EF seatmap but for a WP the seatmap on QF5 for 9SEP I can see has not a lot of blocked seats...

Interesting.. as a WP as well, 38 A B is blocked (in addition to 39 HJK) thought I can see rows 40 A B C in EF
Whereas for you, 38 A B, 39 HJK seems to be available in addition to 40 A B C

They are reserved for higher-tier passengers. Platinum's and Chairman's lounges can see the lot.
