I have done this in the past with long day transits.

I also managed to do it in April when onward connection was missed and then given a flight the next day but still managed to get back airside and into the lounge. I did have a boarding pass for the missed flight though and may also have been given a note from ground crew with permission to go back airside.

I think it should be possible to see ground crew on arrival and mention that I have a flight the next morning and could I go back airside. I think one of the lounges airside closes ~2:00am and would be good to kill some time.

Another option is to use the Arrivals lounges but that closes ~midnight and still leaves a long time until 5:00am.

Anyone with experience going back to airside with overnight transit?

Hi John,
Not sure if I understood your question, but, I had a 6 hour transit in HKG late night/early morning. I found a 24hr pay in lounge which had some small rooms with bed and bathroom available so I got 4hrs or so of sleep and a shower. From memory it is airside.

Here is the link....

Hong Kong

Does that help?

I believe you need a boarding pass or a special note from airline to allow you back airside from arrivals.

I don't think a boarding pass for the next day is sufficient. I arrive ~10:00pm and my next flight is ~8:00am.

If I can get back airside I will have access to CX lounges until they close.

But it is interesting that there are 24hr pay-in lounges which suggest HKG airport is 24 hours. I thought it closed for a few hours through the night.

The travellers lounges airside and plaza arrivals lounge landside are all listed as 24 hours.

Yes, you need a boarding pass for an onward flight. There is a transfer desk in the arrivals area for those who have not yet received their onward boarding pass. I am not sure how closely they check the date on the boarding pass.

So if you don't have a boarding pass, I suggest trying the transfer desk. They may be able to assist with whatever is needed to get through the screening checkpoint and up to the departures area.

What time is your scheduled arrival into HKG and what time is the onward departure? If you arrive close to midnight you may be able to wait it out in the arrivals area before heading to the transfer checkpoint just after midnight. Otherwise go through immigration and wait it out landside where there are shops, restaurants etc, and after midnight go back through airside through the normal outbound checkpoints.

I arrive ~10:00pm and depart ~8:00am.

I am coming in from SIN and can switch to the later flight of which one arrives ~12:30am and the other arrives ~5:30am but considering the next day my day is full of flights I did not want tight connections to spoil it.

And of course I was planning to head off into HKG for the night until I saw the room rates. Should have booked the Holiday Inn for 5,000 points + USD70 but waited too long and availability is now gone.

I don't think you'll have a problem. It's just a 9 hours transit and once you have the BP you go thought a special transit connections sercurity check. I think they just want to see you have a vaild BP for a departing flight. I've had very long connections at HKG before - no problems. You do need the BP I would think.

You should be able to get a boarding pass from the transit lounge.
Given the first departures are ~7.30am so checkin and lounges must be open around 5am. Why not hop on the train, have dinner and a few drinks till say 3-4am and head back to the airport. Although as you said a full day of flying may not help...
I arrived early am and departed the next day 00.15 i think and had no problem leaving and getting back into the Airport, slightly different but no departure tax etc

I should have mentioned that I will have the onward boarding pass as that will be issued in BKK earlier in the day.

My concern is that the boarding pass will be for a flight the next day.

That happens all the time. I don't think same day is ever a requirement? It would be a very stupid one at HKG with around 20 flights departing between midnight and 7am.

Sounds fair.

Overnight transit problem solved then by spending some time in the CX lounges with hopefully some sleep as well.

I wouldn't be worried about having to "exit" and then re-enter, there's plenty of space /restaurants etc outside the sterile area.

Having said that, I dont think it will be a issue, especially if you have a bp, or get one at the transit desk. The only issue I'd see is if you end up having to exit and don't have a bp, and "checkin doesn't open until t-180...."

John,
I just checked my BP from my travel when I used the lounge. My first flight was from MNL to HKG which was scheduled for 820pm departure, so all being equal I arrived about 1020pm. My next flight was 845am the next day and I had already had the BP issued in MNL. I can only conclude my experience is the same as your question, so you should be able to return airside even with the BP for the following day.

Hope that info helps.

I got stranded overnight in June when I nodded off in the CX lounge and missed the last flight to BKK:oops:.
The CX lounges closed around 0030 and reopened about 0530.
I stayed in the Travellers Lounge near gate 1 in the mean time, the other one near gate 40 was closed for the night.
The charge was HKD400, which I think allowed for six or eight hours.
I could have gotten two hours free with my Diners card but didn’t want to be kicked out in the middle of the night. A local (HK) Amex card also gets free entry. And Priority Pass of course.
I must say I didn’t enjoy the experience, too cold for my liking and the chairs were not comfortable for sleeping. I wasn’t aware of the beds mentioned by banger2 above though.
Next time I’ll just stump up for a hotel.

I will have a boarding pass and luggage checked through to MNL. A worry that the lounge closed at 12:30am though. I shall find out tomorrow night and prepare for my return trip.

Hotels are nice but for me the price needs to be reasonable. Not spending $150 for 1 night in HKG when I paid $170 for 7 nights in Thailand.

There is a CX/KA codeshare deparing 02:20 to Busan. Would a CX lounge would stay open? The KA one closes at midnight according to their website. Still, that only gets you to ca 02:00 with CX lounges opening again from 05:30.

According to CX website one of the lounges is open until last flight or ~2:30am.

That is more than enough for me. I can then wait in one of the seats in the terminal until ~5:30am or even walk around the terminal.

In your circumstances, changing to the 12:30am arrival may be a good option. A little more time in SIN lounge, then you should not have any issues with HKG transit and may be able to hang out in a HKG lounge for a few hours, then try to find somewhere comfortable in the departures terminal for a few hours until the first lounge opens early in the morning.

Too late to do now but I will check when I am in SIN in a couple of weeks. I have a really weird series of flights and I do not want the connections to be disrupted.
