Geez. A stolen card raises all the flags then doesn’t it.
I had a similar issue. I used Westpac Earth Black Amex to book a hotel in Split, Croatia via Hotels.com (since the hotel I wanted didnt have their own online booking system) for July 2018, back in Sept 2017 which was before the announcement re banks severing ties with Amex.
The conditions on hotels.com said the room would be charged immediately and that card needs to be presented upon check-in.
When Westpac advised the 4-Apr cancellation date, I noticed that the room hadn't been charged yet. So I called hotels.com and was advised there is no way to update the credit card for a future booking and there was also no way they could force the charge through now (before the stay) so i could just show the cancelled card on check-in.
This is a very timely reminder! I too have made bookings on hotel.com with my Westpac AMEX. I will make sure to leave it in my wallet when I next travel.
Strange that there is no way to update the credit card details on hotels.com. Last year I had a similar problem with booking.com, where a hotel tried to do an authorisation a week before the booking date and found that the card number was rejected, because the card had been replaced. When they emailed me, I went to the booking.com website, updated my card details and then the hotel tried again, successfully this time.
I looked for this, but because the room rate was meant to be paid immediately to secure best price - the only things I could change were my contact details. That is why i ended up calling Hotels.com.
I think when you choose a room rate that has free cancellation or is listed at payment upon check-in / no-show you can edit the card details.
