Re: The totally off-topic thread

Our son is in the building in lockdown.
Really brings things into focus.

Sincerely hope there is no escalation there for your son's sake. My daughter is at the other end of Martin Place, and even there it is locked down with no one allowed to enter, and staff asked to be ready for evacuation if needed.

Lots of shops all over the city are choosing to lock up, even as far away as World Square.

Don't think we ever had innocence.

Terrorism doesn't necessarily have to have religious links either - see Hilton Hotel bombing or Port Arthur

Unfortunately it will mean more people acting out against the mostly moderate Muslim population, which may cause more youth to be disaffected. Every religion has its idiots and psychopaths.

I can only hope however that this gives the more moderate Muslims in Australia a wake up call, that they need to be more active in getting rid of the extremist elements.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Our son has now been evacuated.
Others should happen soon for others I hope.

Umm. Milperra ring any bells? Port Arthur? Sure haven't lost innocence that wasn't already gone.

As for flippant comments in this thread, what flippant comments?

Re: The totally off-topic thread

As a 1st generation aussie, it pisses me off that people behave like this.

If Australia offends you so much, get the heck out and go to a country that practises the beliefs that you want and live peacefully with like minded people. There are a few countries that share your beliefs so go find one and hand over your passport when you leave.

The only plus side I guess is all the emergency services get to put their skills into practise and find any holes in their systems to fix up.

The problem is that it is not unemployed disaffected youth that become radicalised. It is often those doing well in society-

This type of attitude is part of the problem. This is the sort of thing that helps the recruiters.

Please explain. I accept we are all different, with different beliefs and attitudes but I also expect us to live peacefully.

People that behave like those in the café right now do not want to live in this country peacefully with basic respect to others.

We landed from the south this morning and the situation was only just a breaking news item in the gate lounge as I walked off the plane. Kinda suggests landing should be fine.

I half saw some stuff on a TV show about what the Dutch are doing with returned people. It seemed their approach was to actively address the isolation from Dutch society that makes them amenable to going off and joining such groups. Seem much better than ostracising them from society, as that just plays into the brainwashing technique.

yes, that makes sense. But I think too late for anyone aged 15+ but definitely for the kids of the future.

Because one recruiting technique is to tell them their not part of the society. Those sorts of comments just confirms the recruiters' message giving them credibility.

But then Australia has a long history of not being welcoming to new arrivals.

Like I said I only half watched the show. But they did seem to be changing people that had already been and returned from other places. Perhaps people can change?

Pfft. Their actions are what makes them unwelcomed but considering their current state of mind, no common sense will get through to them so they will hear and believe what they want.

No, their actions result from them first feeling ostracised from society, a recruiter then feeding on that feeling of isolation, including statements like "don't like it, leave", until they convince them to take the actions you're talking about.

Granted you position is based on the correct turn of events, for want of a better description. But an evil person can twist those comments to recruit another person to do their bidding.

There are plenty of Australian extremists who are just feeding the problem with more hate. Don't like it, leave is one of their main catchphrases.

2GB has been talking to someone inside the cafe. Not sure if hostage or terrorist.

I do hope that someone rang them rather than 2GB ringing in. If the latter it would be grossly irresponsible and potentially life threatening to the hostages.

Apparently they rang the radio station, the Police Commissioner took over and confirmed it had come from "within". Just one gunman.

I remember the Mike Munro incident - disgusting stuff.
