Hong Kong Hotel

As the one who originated this thread with an inquiry about "Express by Holiday Inn" in HK, I thought I'd do the right thing and post my impressions on the place.

It's located in a smal side-street in Causeway Bay right next to Times Square. The first thing that you notice when you pull up in the cab is that there is no concierge to greet you, in fact there is no driveway to the hotel only a parking bay where the tax drops you off and you then take the escalator up to the check-in.

The rooms (no expansive harbour views here I'm afraid to say) are fairly small but very practical and are done out in a very chic manner. The place only opened last November. The room I was in had a queen-sized bed with a very practical desk area for working, abundant power points (without the need to scramble about on the floor looking for them) and free broadband internet access. The lighting in the room was excellent. There is a small two-seater couch in the room as well.

The bathroom is very modern and functional with a strong and powerful showhead. There was no soap provided in the room but instead there is liquid soap dispenser by the sink and another one in the shower itself.

The room has a small size TV which provides on-demand movies (no CNN). Also there isn't a mini-bar in the room but there are tea & cofffee making facilities and there's no room service either.

The room rate (I paid $HK880 per nite which is about $A155) includes breakfast but the breakfast menu offered in the downstairs restaurant only offers 3 choices and if you're a westerner like me then you'd most likely go with "B" offering eggs, toast, ham, sausage, coffee and juice.

This hotel is certainly not for everyone but if you are travelling on business and looking for a clean and functional hotel with the basics and most importantly at a very reasonable rate in HK then I can thoroughly recommend it.

I'm staying in the Manderin Excelsior next week. Anyone stayed there? Going up for the Rugby 7's and got a package through CX. Business class air and Excelsior hotlel - single room - but assume its comfortable?

Cheers

I'm assuming you are refering to the Excelsior hotel in Causway Bay :?:

I've not stayed there however some details:

Opened Year 1973
No. of Room
Total no. of Room : 883Rooms
Single / Double Room : 540
Twin/ Double : 322
Suite : 21
Average Standard Room Size
Single Room︰285sq ft / 26.49sq m
Twin / Double Room︰285sq ft / 26.49sq m
Nearby MTR Station Causeway Bay exit E(Walk 1 minute(s))
Airport to Hotel Transport Take City Bus A11 to Gloucester Road

Personally I'd catch the airport express and then the MTR to Causeway Bay for convenience and speed (Cost approx $A18). Bus is cheaper however considerably longer (time) trip.

Didn't know they'd rebadged it as a Mandarin...but I've stayed there 3 or 4 times. This is the hotel that QF uses for it's Flight Crew (well, it was 5 years ago).

Comfortable - yes, from recollection (well, it was only an overnighter last time I was there and didn't have a lot of time in bed, mainly at the bar drinking with the crew, as I was dating one of them). I used to duck out the back entrance and catch a taxi if I wanted to go anywhere...getting there I can't help, as I was on the Crew Bus

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

The Mandarin Oriental group owns the Excelsior. Might want to check because the Mandarin Oriental is currently closed for refurbishment and they are using The Landmark Mandarin Oriental.

I would think it is the Excelsior which can be found at http://www.mandarinoriental.com/hotel/517000001.asp.

Haven't stayed there for about 2 years, but you can usually pick up a room for between HK$550-HK$900.

It is close to the Causeway Bay MTR but you certainly wouldn't want to walk it from the stadium (unless your really plastered, which in that case it will take you a very long time :D )
