when you exit from baggage collection, look for the information desk (desk B I think from memory). The right desk has a Novotel sign on display. Let them know you want to go to the Novotel and they will put a sticker on your shirt and ask you take a seat until the shuttle is ready. Then someone will escort you down to the bus once it has arrived. Its all very civilised.

The rooms are very modern and a reasonable size for an overnight transit.
Cheers.

I enquired about the shuttle bus when I made the booking over the internet. I received a response via email within about an hour of making the booking advising of where to catch the bus and its operating hours as well as what an approximate cab fare would be. Pretty good service.

For reference you can go to either counter A16 or B16.

Must have been B16 I have used. I know it was pretty easy to find when I have used it.

Personally, I wouldn't use the Conrad for either stay.

I'd be looking at 2pm checkin and Noon checkout to get full use of the facilities a Hotel like the Conrad should provide.

For the first you need somewhere close by so you can 'crash' ASAP, then have a look around the island before a noon airport express check-in for your optimised Wing experience ...

The second gives a little more time for night sights ... depends upon who you are with I expect - anywhere close to where you intend to spend the evening should suffice before your 6am departure to the Wing for brekky.

Well now that I booked my F trip back to SYD from SIN I will have all of Friday and Saturday in HKG so I will be booking the Conrad for that trip - still undecided on the first visit. We will have a lunch time flight out of HKG on the Sunday to SIN (probably on SQ) so I won't be using the WIng for that flight :'(

Posting this from the Novotel Citygate.

Upgraded to a junior suite on check-in - not bad for booking the cheapest rate on the internet (no QFF points though).

Very easy transfer from HKG airport too.

Thanks again for the recommendations.

From the QANTAS website :
3 travellers, 2 adults one child 13 yrs, 2 nights, TOTAL $408 AUD
Seems like a good price when compared with other on line booking places I looked at. How much for the upgrade (if its not too rude a question????:D )

How do you reckon we would go 3 in the room? Seems that the biggest whinge about HKG rooms is their size.

Was thinking of having one night in town and our last night out here?
Or is the subway that good and handy it doesn't matter?

My upgrade was complimentary due to lack of non-smoking rooms .

Your rate for 2 nights sounds OK. I paid about $180 for a queen room on my first night there. I stayed another night on my way back to MEL, booked the night before via the Novotel website, and paid about $210 - again for a queen room.

The rooms are a reasonable size., although not much room for an additional bed (even a trundle). I have stayed in much smaller :(

I had a late arrival and early departure on both occasions, which is why I chose the Citygate. If you have plenty of time then probably better to spend both nights in town as there is more to do / see. The MTR service to HKG airport is very good.

Well hopefully there is a smokers convention on when we are there !!!!!

We arrive late, have one full day and then leave 8AM the next day, so I was mainly concerned with the transfer in the early morning.

Thanks for the reply

I'd recommend staying in Hong Kong (rather than out at the airport) both nights as well. You can always check-in the day before using the In-Town check-in (Hong Kong or Kowloon Airport Express stations), so all you need to do on the morning is wake-up and get to the airport.

Can someone explain the early check in, how does it work.:?:

We are on QF29 (8.00AM) and just a bit worried about getting out there in time.

Does the airport express (train?) run at like 6.00AM?

Thanks in advance.

Most of the info you are after is here:
Hong Kong International Airport - Transport - Airport Express

Be aware, that various MTR lines may not start that early, so if not actually near the Hong Kong Station or Kowloon station, that you should check the MTR gets you there in an appropriate timeframe or that Hotel Transit busses are available.

Holy smoke Mal that was quick, I was just in another topic asking another set of questions (of course) and I look back here "BANG" a reply.

Thanks for the link.

Okay now I have been looking for the closest hotel to either Kowloon or Hong Kong stations, but there doesn't seem to be any within walking distance of either !!

Maybe not, but taxi's are easy to get and quite cheap.

There are free shuttle buses run by the Airport Express that run to some local hotels, from both the Hong Kong and the Kowloon stations. I think there is a list of these on the website.

Taxis are very plentiful, and very cheap. The flagfall is $HK15 (around $AUD2.20), and a five to 10 minute taxi ride usually costs no more than $HK40.

The Taxi's are indeed very good once you overcome the language issues. They'll normally understand the Hotel names and then at the hotel get reception to write the destination down for the taxi driver.

I think the taxi drivers in HK generally understand major destinations and roads when given in English. Obviously, if the passenger knows the Cantonese names, all the better. I've done 25 trips to HK in the past four years, and caught taxis on many occasions (I know, my carbon footprint must be huge), and not really had major problems.

Thanks for all the great advice. If we do the in town check in, how much time can we deduct from the amount of time required at the airport?

Our flight is scheduled for 8 AM, the first Airport Express starts at 6 AM, Airport Express shuttle buses don't start till @6.15 AM (now is there a coordination problem here or what???).

So should we be catching a taxi to make the 6 AM train or could we afford, if we did in town check in the evening before, to wait for the shuttle bus from the hotel to Kowloon station?

Sorry for all the questions, but the last time I was in HKG, Kai Tak was still in operation.

Cheers

Twice in the last year or so I have used the QF188/QF30 flights and each time caught the first train from Central. I flagged taxis at 5:30am from near the hotel.

The taxi fare (from the "Western District") was about HKD35.00 (AUD5.00). (Including the bags in the boot csurcharge).

To answer my own question... I just made a booking online for a room here, incl bed, at www.plaza-asia.com HKD600/8hrs incl shower and food, although I will leave early to finish up in a Cabana at the Wing Flounge. Still, not bad value for those too lazy to train in to the city and back or too cheap to use the Regal or Novotel nextdoor. Will report back on my experience.

Hmm, I could have used this last year. Checked in at Novotel at 11:30pm, given a smoking room when non-smoking was booked, finally resolved at about midnight and then checked out again at 5:45am. About 5 1/2 hours use of the room for ~$200.

Although I am sure that my bed was a bit more comfortable than the nap lounges.
