Have received a letter from Robin Watters today (she's the Area Director of Sales & Marketing, Hilton Australasia), advising a change in the dining benefits for Premium Club members:

Important Changes to your Hilton Premium Club membership

To ensure that your Hilton Premium Club membership benefits continue to offer you superior value and having regard to your feedback, we have reviewed and are changing the dining benefits to make it easier for you.

From 1st January 2006, the tiered discounted dining benefits for both hotel guests and casual diners which are currently awarded at participatng Hilton Hotels in australia and New Zealand will be replaced.

You will be entitled, from 1st January 2006, to a 20% discount off the total restaurant and bar account (including alcohol)*, at participating Hilton Hotels in Australia and New Zealand (whether you are staying at the hotel or just casually dining or visiting).

* Terms and conditions apply, minimum spend of $50 applies to discount, maximum number of 10 people per card, per table and excluding items that involve an additional third party cost to the Hotel - such as catering and banquets

I have spoken already to Don Thaker (Administration Manager, Brisbane) who asked my thoughts - well, whilst they have taken away a 50% discount on Food and reduced to 20%; they have added a 20% discount on Alcohol (where previously there was none). I actually think it's neutral benefit-wise (well, perhaps the heavier drinkers will like the extra discount :D ).

Thanks for the heads up Lindsay Wilson. To add (a mail I received this afternoon):

Dear BlacKnox,

SEE THE UNSEEN WITH HILTON

Stay two nights, get the third for FREE!

Stay two nights at any participating Hilton Family hotel in Australia*, China, Japan, Southeast Asia or South Korea between 15 November 2005 and 28 February 2006 and your third night is FREE when you pay with your VISA card.

Visit the exciting Arabian Peninsula or fabled Egypt, and enjoy special weekend and promotional rates at our luxurious hotels. Let Hilton bring the extraordinary into your life.  Uncover the details at hilton.com/SeetheUnseenMEAP.

Step outside your city, your country, your life, and find yourself in a world where the extraordinary becomes the ordinary. Discover unknown treasures in the street markets of Southeast Asia. Feel the floor shake and prepare to move out of the way as 600-pound sumo wrestlers crash into each other in Ryogoku, Japan. Hop on Australia's transcontinental railway, and eye exotic wildlife as you sweep across the Blue Mountains and treeless plains of The Nullarbor. Fly through warm winds skiing down huge sand dunes in Dubai. Or sleep under the stars in the white desert of Egypt, where eroded calcium deposits give shape to eerie, otherworldly formations.

Not sure if you need to pay by Visa or not. It says and your third night is FREE when you pay with your VISA card in the blurb, and then in the T&C says and payment with VISA is NOT required.

Maybe you just need to book the room using Visa?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

But you have to be paying what looks like rack rate. I checked the Brisbane Hilton and the rate to get this deal is US$170/night for the two nights and the third night is free. This gives an average price per night of US$113.

Of course we should still get 20% off this rate for Premium Club members.

I am about to book for 2 nights, but will probably not both with this deal since I can get much the same rate and only spend it for 2 nights instead of having to stay 3 nights to get the better per/night average rate.

Horses for Courses NM. I plan to be in Perth for 3 nights early January so the deal looks ok for me. Of course I won't know if it is really any value until I try to book and can compare final prices.

Reading it again it's now obvious that the * denotes no Visa required for Australian Hilton stays, though Visa is needed for stays in China, Japan, Southeast Asia or South Korea.

Just check on the price you can get with a normal booking to makre sure it is a good deal for you.

Just checked this deal for Brisbane Hilton while I was making a reservation for a stay later this month. The 3 nights deal is only available on the $215 bed and breakfast rate (less 20% for Premium Club membership making it $172). The rate is then averaged over the 3 nights, so the $172/night for 2 nights becomes $114.67/night for 3 nights.

I opted for the pre-purchase rate of $155/night reduced to $124 by Premium Club discount, for 2 adjoining deluxe rooms for 2 nights. The bed and breakfast deal is not good for us since we get exec lounge access as a HH Diamond member and the breakfast up there is very good.

To use my $125 Premium Club vouchers would have cost even more as these are only for the basic room, which at the Brisbane Hilton do not have any adjoining rooms. So up "upgrade" the voucher to use on a deluxe room would cost us $25 per room per night, or $150/room. So once again the 20% discount wins the day, and never any issues with HHonors credits for nights, stays and spend when using published rates.

Seems that IainF has received his letter. We were just talking and he's unhappy about the change as he uses the dining benefits a lot.

I wonder if Premium Club actually did ask any of it's members about the changes, or it's just the spin?

Seems that Focus Groups are easy to put together and a lot of useful sharing of information goes both ways

I will probably be using the 50% off dining benefit once more before the end of December. And that will probably be the last time before my Premium Club membership expires. And at this stage I do not expect to be renewing my Premium Club membership. The value has been continually diminished for my usage pattern since I first joined about 3 years ago.

Next year I think I will be using my stash of HH points to fund my Hilton visits.

True.

The alleged "monthly" specials updates are pretty late this month.
