First time i have received an email like this

I don't see the advantage of checking in online, particularly as I am hoping for an upgrade.

I can't read it, but would agree re seemingly no point in OLCI (you would still have to line up to collect room key etc. wouldn't you?)
 
I don't know how to make the picture appear bigger, used snipping tool to capture it.
 
I've used OLCI once. It was a Hampton and I was only Silver, so upgrades not a major concern. Good: chose what room I wanted (went for highest floor) and just mentioned I'd done OLCI at reception and they handed me the keys. Very quick, no credit card swipe etc.
 
Was informed that this is a precursor to bypassing the reception completely, i.e. using the smartphone to access the rooms. Not sure when and where it will be implemented first.
