I came across a rather interesting article that claims there is a legal loophole affecting all tickets issued in Italy. Apparently, this loophole means it's totally legal to use hidden-city ticketing (where you throw away the last leg/s) and even to use flights out of order. In other words, you may be able to skip the first flight and not have the rest of the booking cancelled. The catch appears to be that you must contact the airline within 24 hours of no-showing for the flight.
The article claims that all tickets issued in Italy (even if it's just an online travel agency based in Italy, for travel anywhere in the world) are covered by this rule.
I'm personally not prepared to try it, but this could open some interesting possibilities if true.
