Hi there,

I'm booking a flight for Thurs evening for a colleague and myself and need some advice.

The Qantas website shows that QF464 (dep 19:30) has a $228 Flexi Saver fair available. By comparison, an earlier flight QF462 (dep 19:00) has only $327 Fully Flexible fares available.

I was intending to book the 19:30 flight as I am concerned we may not make it in time for the 19:00 flight. However if we finish in the city early and make it to the airport in time, would we be able to get on board QF462 on this fare?

Or is the website indicating that if we purchase a flexi saver we'd not be able to move the earlier flight irrespective of whether seat are available?

I am Gold staus and my colleague is Bronze.

Flexi-Saver is a K class fare whilst Fully Flexible is either H or (full) Y.

Both have no restrictions for voluntary re-booking and re-routing on the day of travel.

If you are both a "no show" for the 17.00 flight, then you forfeit the fare under the Flexi-Saver fare; whilst a no show on the Fully Flexible allows you still a full refund.

If you are on the Flexi Saver, then a simple phone call even on your way to the airport (assuming you think you won't show up befoe the 20 minute close-off time) will mean that QF Res will look at the availability on the next flight (17.30) for K fares. If there is availability, then you're changed and no cost. If only H or Y availability is showing, they can look at the cost differential at the time and advise you.

If you're running late (or think you are), they can put a note in the booking to say that you've called and if you get a nice CSA they'll change you at the airport at no cost (a la me last week, I missed my SYD/CBR flight by 3 minutes, but the CSA saw the note in the booking from QF Res and swiched me to the next flight, gratis - I thanked her profusely for going out of her way to help me when she didn't have to).

This information comes directly from the Domestic Australia Fare Structure table I have pinted out and hanging on my wall, both at work and at home. It has saved my bacon also having it in my FF bag a number of times (when I've almost been a no show using a K ticket!)...

Status will not mean anything, it's the fare class that's important to QF Res.

Thanks Lindsay. I think I'll just book the Y class fare on the 7:00pm flight and if we run late it shouldn't be any hassle to get onto another flight.

Where can I find the Domestic Australia Fare Structure table that you mentioned? It sounds like a good thing to carry.

Try these links:

(very quick idea of the general conditions)

or

(shows an in depth analysis of each type of fare)

[Lindsay, should this be in the UQG? I looked and didn't see it]
