Hi there,

My friend and I have to fly down to Melbourne at the end of the year for work (we are both under 18) and we may be flying together. We will be travelling with my Mum as well. So I want to know what sort of checks will be done if my Parents say she is a niece? Will she need to provide an ID? Or will they believe us if we change her last name?
Any ideas please! Trying to not pay $300 to fly there and back!

Is this so your "friend" can purchase their ticket via Points from your family? As far as i know Qantas has never checked my booking - I have flown my sister, brother in law, nephew, son and my parents. My sibling and her family do not have the same last name as I - it has not been a problem. Or are you buying a ticket and want your "friend's" FF points? facts are important

All three tickets (my mum, myself and my friend) would be booked using my parent's frequent flyer points for the classic award seat. So she'd technically be using our points however won't be booking it - we will be booking it.

Mainly need to know what sort of checks get done at check in - I.e. Do we need to prove she is a niece?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

She will need to show ID at check-in, but that merely confirms the person in whose name the ticket is booked, is the one flying. The CSA doesn't know the details behind the points booking. Your mother is doing the booking and self-assessing the veracity of the information, so she is the one at risk if QF happen to ever do a spot audit...

Of course, if ones uses the kiosk check-ins and bag drop, then less interaction with a CSA...and no specific ID check.

You will be fine - no checks are done as to relationships.

more concerned about what "Reasonable satisfaction" means? like QANTAS help would be nice

That's where the ethical and moral dilemma starts - you know that what you are going to do is not by the T&C's...

Who can I book for?You can redeem for yourself or any eligible family member

where eligible family member states in the T&C's (as you pointed out):

'Eligible Family Member' of a Member means any person the Member can demonstrate, to the reasonable satisfaction of Qantas, as being related to that Member in any of the ways described below:

  • Husband/Wife
  • Parent/Step-parent
  • Domestic Partner/De Facto
  • Child, including foster & step-child
  • Brother/Sister
  • Half Brother/Sister
  • Grandparent
  • Grandchild
  • Son/Daughter-in-law
  • Brother/Sister-in-law
  • Father/Mother-in-law
  • Uncle/Aunt
  • Nephew/Niece
  • First cousin

Do you you really feel it is worth the risk???

Whilst I am not condoning breaking the conditions on which you participate in the program, I will say that I have redeemed for many family members who do not share my surname. Indeed, neither my mother nor my sister share my surname. Nor are they anything alike. None of my other family members I have redeemed for share my surname either. The only person in my family who shares my surname is my father and I have not had contact with him for 10 years.

So, as a simple observation, the person for whom you book does not need to share your surname. I will also say that I have never heard of QF checking this information. Even if they did, one might ask: how would they be able to check this? I leave the resolution of the dilemma with you and your parents.

Our program's definition of an "eligible family member" is quite generous, and does not require surnames to be matching. Bookings are accepted in good faith as per the terms and conditions agreed to by the member.

However we reserve the right to cancel a booking if it's deemed fraudulent, or against the outlined obligations and responsibilities: Frequent Flyer - About the Program - Terms & Conditions
