Hi all,

First time posting but long time browser.

I have a somewhat interesting question. I am scheduled to depart on QF1 in a couple of weeks time and I am continuing on to Venice on BA0578 (Business). Problem is, I booked these flights separately and I apparently I can’t through check my baggage. I have two questions but they are pretty much one I guess.

One:
Should I move my flight to the BA flight leaving Gatwick almost 4 hours later than BA0578?

Two:
I am flying First. Would they by any chance make and exception and through check my baggage?

Very keen to hear what you all have to say. Will try calling Qantas tomorrow, we’ll see how long I stay on hold for...

Cheers,

Colous.

Hopefully official policy isn’t too strict...

There's many reports here that they won't do it more than they will do it...

It's an impossible connection to make if you have to collect and re-check your bags. You may want to look at changing your BA flight.

Is there any reason why you have booked SYD-DXB-LHR-VCE as two separate tickets? QF fares for SYD/VCE do allow routing SYD-DXB-LHR-VCE as a single ticket and it'd probably have cost you potentially considerably less to book it as one ticket in the first place.

It's not totally impossible but I would not want to ruin the F experience with the constant stress of making a BA connection that isn't linked. I would look to change to a later BA service but not the LGW. LGW is a zoo (too many regional Spain flights this year so jaded) and the LGW transfer is another nightmare to contend with. If possible, link the two itineraries so you are protected or just move to a later service if available for your own piece of mind.

For what its worth i was on that exact combination last year in July on one ticket and i think if you search here you can find someone else who was on it before me. I was in J. By the time i went through security and made it back airside I had roughly 30 minutes untill boarding and just had time to shower with no food. With my connection they bumped me the front of the line.

Given that its BA who rumour has it that they were the ones behind the interline changes im not sure much bending of the rules QF will do.

I stupidly didn't realise I need to go the Venice...

How is there a way to combine the booking, if any?

Would Qantas happily link these two do you think?

I presume the VCE flights are booked with BA?

Qantas are unlikely to usefully 'link' but may add the VCE flights to your booking - what are the change and service fees for doing so? Also, you may need to refund the BA booking with any assessed service fees.

IMHO, you would be far better off changing the VCE flights to a later time.

If you have flex F tickets, any reason not to cancel and then rebook with the routing madrooster advised?

Just spoke to Qantas and BA. Qantas said it is entirely up to the discretion of check in and as long as BA agrees. However BA said that it isn't up to them and entirely up to Qantas. Trying Qantas one last time to see what they say about BA. The cost of linking them would have been $5,900 .

If I don't get the answer I like I will just rebook a BA flight from Gatwick and cancel the one leaving Heathrow.

Why not spend the day in London and get a hotel at LHR for the night, putting the onward to VCE back a day?

Trudging to LGW for a BA flight wouldn't be my plan, for a long list of reasons that only lengthen when you add in the relaxing F journey from Australia.

I am not sure which day you are travelling. But searching a random day next week I can see two BA flights from Heathrow your flight and also an evening flight about 6 or 7 pm with reasonable arrival in Venice. (but may not be the same on your day)

This would give further options

A. A jump on the Piccadilly line and have a day in London.

B. Arriving as First and leaving as Business you would have several lounges options for a day of indulgence.

C. Do what I did once rented a car and drove into the Chiltern Hills and the Thames valley for the day. Lunch at a country pub. Beautiful but often overlooked area. Returned to airport for evening flight.

D. Or drive/bus to Windsor for a day.

Otherwise as you say the shuttle bus to Gatwick where there are flights at midday and afternoon.

I had a similar (but not identical) dilemma a couple of months ago. I was flying QF9 (revenue J) to LHR and then (via a separate booking) onto MXP on BA with a J award ticket. Qantas website indicates where there is an award flight plus a revenue flight, the luggage should be checked through - but I wasn't totally confident. Anyway, I arrived at the F check-in (and I had upgraded to F as well) very early and the lovely Qantas people checked our luggage through no worries. It took a bit of 'mucking about' but all good. Not identical to the OP's situation, but similar. I had the exact same issue on the return leg, but as I had no confidence that the BA checkin at MXP (another zoo) would be so helpful, I changed flights to overnight at LHR to be certain. Good luck

If booking a flight to VCE from LGW you should be aware that the transfer time is highly variable. A few years ago we were on the bus for 2and 3/4 hours (the then "record" was 4 hours). It may have changed but it was possible to buy a ticket by walking straight on to the bus - avoiding the dedicated terminals which require a high education level to master them and are totally incomprehensible to non-English speakers. If a ticket does finally appear you will hear a sound like someone has won the lottery. It also helps if you know which terminal at Gatwick is approprate for your departure.
Addition - you can now book online but I would recommend some flexibility in departure time. I am yet to suffer this process.

I did exactly that flight combination last week (and also a few months ago), QF1 and BA578 to Venice, in economy, and had plenty of time for a shower and breakfast in the BA lounge after transferring terminals.
The terminal transfer bus is quick and easy, and free, so you don't go through passport control in Heathrow, only Venice (much quicker).
I only had a cabin bag, so no waiting for baggage, and I had bought the tickets already combined on the Qantas site. Enjoy Venice!
