I'm travelling to Malta next year, flying into LHR on QF1 and onwards to Malta 4 hours later.
The LHR-MLA sector is on a separate ticket (can't be put on the same PNR as QF sectors).
Googling, the various sites talk about transiting on a single ticket within 24 hours of arrival to avoid the tax.
I can't find any information on whether or not the tax is payable even though I am transiting LHR, but on two tickets.

Anyone know the answer?

I believe you have to pay. It must be on the same ticket, or a conjunction ticket (where each ticket must refer to the other that it is being read 'in conjunction').

Technically the UK APD is not payable if the transit is under 24 hours. But if you are booking separate tickets then the only way to avoid paying the tax is to have a knowledgeable travel agent make the booking. They'll need to reference your inbound flight when making the booking. As I'm not a TA I don't know exactly how this works though.

I think the easiest thing in this case would be just to pay it. At least with Malta the tax is only ~$30 (unless you're in Business class, in which case it's ~$60).

Thanks for prompt reply, MT, I was afraid that was the case.
We're returning ZRH-LHR-MEL on one ticket so return journey is unaffected.

I do hope you mean departure tax. Getting deported will affect future travel to may countries.

What's the APD these days for premium cabins, for someone who's going to buy a one way LHR - CBR. My guesstimate was ~ AUD 300 pp.

APD rates from 1 April 2018 are £26 for standard rate Band A (under 2000 miles) and £156 for Band B (over 2000 miles). Reduced rate, for the lowest cabin on the flight, is half the standard rate. There is a higher rate, but it is unlikely that many travelers are impacted by that rate (aircraft over 20 tonnes configured for less then 19 pax).

2018 rates are unchanged from 2017 rates for Band A and increase by £6 for Band B.
