Hi to you all,

first post on this awesome, but hard to navigate website. Had to share this.

I love this photo, because as of right now the Airport link is closed due to flooding, whilst it's glaring billboard shines on in the back ground.........

In fairness, I suspect that "Switch off billboards promoting Airport Link" is somewhat down the list in the emergency flooding procedures handbook... ;)

In a situation like that you would need to have the utmost faith in the E.L.C.B. on any of electrical equipment, circuits in that area being A) installed properly and B) properly tested, having the records to back it up for your day in court. The slightest bare conductor or unseal slab 'J' box or anything similar and that could become very messy, very quickly. In this day and age I am very surprised that space was deem fit for occupancy for a lot of reasons.

I believe SYD airport is leading the world in rapid aircraft disembarkation. Why just today I heard on the grapevine they were enquiring about redeploying the tried and true Hydrofoils to replace the aerobridges and each Hydrofoil will continue on to Circular Quay.......stopping all stations! ;)

Speaking about train stations, this one's a goodie, with a caption stating "Ferries will be replacing trains till further notice"

I was surprised how quickly they rallied, however Qantas got a much easier gig than virgin and jet star in T2.

Flew out of Syd this morning and my flight was only delayed after boarding to wait for PAX coming from other cancelled flights. Was a full 767 in the end.

The Tarmac seemed alot busier than normal as well, alot of heavies around from yesterday that I assume didn't depart last night and the crew ran out of hours?

Helluva storm. Thick layer of snow up the mountains too.

AFF regular Erkpod tweeted that his train hit a fallen tree! Thankfully no one was hurt.

This city can't handle rain and our airport is just the tip of it.
Do any cities handle rain well?

I know Brisbane city shuts down with a fraction of the rain received in Sydney.

Yes, I read that post, liked it, then read the rest and quickly un liked. Apparently I have a waterfall still running down the cliffs at the back of my cottage. I dread to go and inspect the damage.

That wasn't just rain JK. It was Cyclone 2 winds in some areas. Sometimes it looked like the Harbour Bridge itself was moving!

... Do tell what fraction of rainfall shuts down Brisbane? The highest rainfall recorded yesterday in sydney was 143mm. Most areas were less than 100 mm, around 60 mm or less.

So what fraction shuts down Brisbane city? 10% - 6-14 mm, 20% 12-28mm. Brisbane had 300 mm over 3 days in 2011 and that didn't shut down the city. I know because my grandfather was able to make the trip from the city area to his funeral south of the city. That ain't a fraction of the rainfall Sydney had yesterday.

It really was awful listening to all the emergency sirens all night. I felt so bad every time I heard one (which were many). Didn't get to sleep till 4 am. Also watching peoples furniture and plants flying off their balcony's was a bit hairy, but what was really intense was watching the ferries come in and out, until finally cancelled. Have to salute them for amazing skill!

Speaking of cities handling rain events I was in Dar Es Salaam about 20 years ago and walking along the street I wondered what all the bricks and concrete blocks placed at roughly metre intervals here and there were for. I found out in the next downpour - the streets and paths flooded to about 30cm deep and everyone used the blocks as stepping stones!

I was here in 2011. I couldn't get from Central to Toowong in the morning. Walked to Milton Station and gave up as the water was everywhere. Went down to the river to have a look and walked back to Spring Hill. The city itself was a mess with water coming up Edward St.

The city has shut down a few times since with afternoon thunderstorms.

So please spare me your knowledge of Brisbane.

The trouble is that in Jan 2011 Brisbane DID NOT have a fraction of the rain experienced by Sydney 3 days ago. They had at least twice the amount of rain over 3 days. And about the same amount of rain on any one of those 3 days. You claimed that Brisbane shuts down with a fraction of the rain. In Jan 2011 Brisbane had the same or more rain. Your claim is demonstrably wrong.

Sorry if my knowledge of Brisbane is inconvenient to the stuff that you just make up. I have never seen the city shut down due to an afternoon storm. But then I only studied and worked in Brisbane cbd for 10 years. Clearly that knowledge is nothing compared to your 5 part time years.

Also you'll probably find that a Brisbane afternoon storm delivers more that a fraction of the rainfall. For example on 24 January 2014 BOM measured rainfall of 94 mm. About the same as Sydney received the other day. According to news reports that caused localised flooding and traffic chaos but didn't shut down the city. Shock horror! Same rainfall, same outcome. Who would've thunk it.
