FWIW, I have both QC2 and QC3 Bose (no, I'm not from Tassie :p) and I would rate them both as excellent. They are the first item to go in the cabin bag for a long haul.

I'll even pack a pair for longer interstate trips these days. You don't realise how noisy a 737 is until you've tried these babies.

Even my wife who abhors gadgets now loves them. :)

I'd second that, I never go anywhere without my Bose QC2's, they are worth every cent, and are a great way to avoid have a chats on flights even when not listening to music.

Yep. My Shure E3s block out the cabin noise equally as well when connected to the aircraft IFE and to my iPod or laptop. So I can enjoy the noise isolation qualities all the time, and the audio quality from my iPod or laptop.

Just bumping this as the most recent NC Headphone thread.

Shure "recently" changed their product range and I am trying to figure out how the two sets of models compare price wise so that I can compare them to the Ultimate Ears that I have at the moment.

Does anyone have current RRP for the new Shure range compared to the RRP for the old range?

I am thinking of changing the Ultimate ears to Shure on my next overseas tripbut am having trouble trying to compare like for like.

I currently have the Ultimate Ears SuperFi 3Studio which retail for around $140 - which some people prefer over the Shure as the cables are replaceable (which I have had to do).

Any info would be useful -

Cheers

FWIW, I have been using noise cancelling headphones for ALL travel (including Sydney's noisy rail network) for the past nine years . . . so far as convenience (size etc.) is concerned the Sennheisers are sensational and reasonably priced. The actual noise cancelling is a little better in the Bose QC (it would want to be for the price) but I also have a pair of PlaneQuiet which I bought through a travel site very cheaply ($AUD75) and they were pretty much as good as the Bose as well as being just as clunky as the Bose.

I am now investigating "bud" noise cancelling earphones and will post results in due course.

Old models and RRP. Note that some places may still have stocks of these and you may be able to score a good deal.

E2c = $175
E3c = $305
E4c = $475
E5c = $799

I recently (May this year) purchased a set of E3c for my son (a birthday present) for less than half the listed RRP.

New models:

SE110 = $139
SE120 = $199
SE310 = $319
SE420 = $449
SE530 = $569

You can find a good comparison here.

I bought a pair of the SE420's last year in the US. Can't remember exactly what I paid for them, but they are excellent.

Find them much better than the NC headphones handed out in QF J.

Thanks - the cable in my ultimate has broken again so it might be time for a change - not sure to what though...

My budget isn't huge so I ordered a set of Plane Quiet NC7's for $99 online. Ha anyone had any good/bad experiences with this brand/headphones.

i had a set of plane Quiet's. Got them a few years back. .they were good, but the sound was quite low i felt. I love my Bose QC2's though... it's the first thing I pack!

I own 2 sets of Noise Cancelling Headphones, I listened to how good they were in 2003 and knew straight away I had to buy some. Not sure what type they were.

The first ones I brought were the Sony MDR NC5, brought them back in 2003 for about $170.00, worth every cent.

In 2005 when I visited the USA I brought a pair of Bose QC2 for $423.00 AUD

I take the Sony pair on most of my domestic flights.

The Bose are a little bulker and I wouldn't replace them; but the Sony I would replace, I found a shop who sells the replacement ear pads so they look like new again.

I don't know why every frequent flyer doesn't own a pair of noise cancelling head phones.

I have two sets; best is a pair of CREATIVE - they work quite well for me; and, if I lose them it will only set me back the original $65 purchase price (less depreciation). ;)

I can recommend a set of Jabra C820s. They're discontinued but you can still hunt them down and I have seen them around for as low a $75! ..(try googling Jabra C820s at shopbot)

Here's a review that compares them to Bose QC2....not quite as good but damn close..

Because some of us find sound-isolating earphones to be even better ;).
And some of us find having something IN your ear really annoying...;) thus my choice of Bose QC2s

I have two reasons - I use mine every day on the train so they need to be light and compact (and not require new batteries or charging every couple of days). Secondly the noise isolation block out the jabbering kids on the train a little more effectively.
