Just thought I would ask as I have very rearly been charged for something I did not order or sign for. at a chain hotel
but on a recent trip to Miami I stayed at the Cadillac hotel.
the second night I woke at 2 am so thought I would check the account and there was a 104 us charge I did not recognise, so I called down to the front desk as we were checking out that morn.
I asked what it was and was told it was 4 breakfasts( there were 2 of us and Im Titanium so get free continental voucher)
I said it's not mine I did not sign for it take it off. on checkout it was not there.
lo and behold on 10 jan it appeared on my amex card.So I sent an email.
no reply
another email no reply so I sent another and copied it to the Marriott Customer care team . I also sent a complaint to the BBB Florida.
Finally it was reversed, though I did have a currency conversion issue so I asked for point compensation for my stress
they agreed to 25k
but to this time it still is not in my account
so 2 nights ago I get another hit on my other ( the one I guaranteed the trip)amex for 150aud
so I sent a screaming email and called the hotel and left a message , up till now it has not eventuated on my card.
this is the only time I ahave ever had a drama with denying a charge for my 700 Marriott nights my 900 Hyatt nights and my 950 hilton nights.
anyone else had a drama?

I had JW Marriott try to charge me twice for the same room last month. Took ages to sort it out

We had a very nice degustation dinner at a small boutique hotel … we got the bill on checkout and it was missing the dinner!
When we asked, they’d apparently charged it to the wrong room, and that other room had already checked-out & there’d been an unpleasant argument about being charged for something they hadn’t actually partaken of …

Had it a couple times, but always managed to pick it up at checkout, so it’s been reversed and the bill ‘finalised’.

Re currency conversion charges, my bank advised me ages ago to deal directly with them rather than the merchant. The merchant needs to ‘void’ the charge rather than reverse it… that way there’s no currency charges. If the merchant doesn’t know how, or won’t, then the bank was haply to do a chargeback.

But 25k points seems reasonable :)?

Had a hotel try to gaslight me into thinking I’d only booked 2 rooms when I had booked and paid for 3. They never fully explained what had happened and never apologised (typical Singaporean service tbh) but basically I booked 2 rooms and had it guaranteed that the 2 would be upgraded to a single 2 bedroom suite.
And then booked another room and that was for my parents.
On checkin they kept insisting that there was never another room and they had upgraded it massively for me. When they printed the papers for it, however, I managed to point out that the rate was twice what a single room would cost and asked how that could happen under their made up scenario.
Cue sudden awareness and that “oh sh**” look people get.

I never ever take anything from the minibar but have had an experience of expensive liquor being added to my bill after checkout at Sofitel Noosa.

After a friendly but assertive email to them, reminding them I was upgraded to a better room on my second night, they realised the error and were very apologetic.

In addition to the odd mini-bar incorrect charge (easily sorted out) I've had 3 really concerning ones:
  1. A lodge in Sequoia Park California charged about $US500 to my credit card after checkout - turned out it was another guest's room charge which they somehow managed to put on my credit card - took a few weeks to get it corrected.
  2. A $1000 charge from a luxury lodge in Peru after checkout - no reason ever given and it took months to get it corrected - lost $100 on the exchange rate and foreign credit card fees. I posted my issue on my Trip Advisor review and management replied that it wasn't their fault blah blah .....
  3. Another time - $1500 charge from a very upmarket hotel's gift shop in Cape Town where I had not even stayed - just had lunch in their restaurant- again took some back and forth to get sorted - no explanation was ever provided - looked like employee fraud to me.
All of these happened days after checkout - so make sure you check your credit card charges every day when travelling.
