Has anyone had success with the call-up "Marginal" xASA's?

Hi everyone,

Firstly - sorry for what might be a simple/newbie question, I've spent some time looking through the relevant threads on this forum and trying to get my head around this but haven't been able to find a definitely answer, so I would just like to clarify my understanding of how things works now!

In preparation for booking some JASAs of my own, I've recently been looking over the information regarding the changes in JASA booking and having to do it over the phone. I've read through this thread and looked at the reference guide thread (and Jessica's spreadsheet), and wanted to ask about some of the bookings I see there and the points values people have stated vs what I can find on the Qantas website.

One of the routes I have been looking at is MEL-SYD-ASP-SYD-MEL. I note several people in the spreadsheet booking this for 48,000 points + co-pay. However when I search for this route on the website (whether the new online ASA or for classic awards) the stated amount of points is 72,000 + co-pay. I assume that this is where calling Qantas comes in? ie - where previously I would have selected the classic award flight on the website and then used the points + pay slider to bring the points amount down, now I need to call and ask them to do this and quote me over the phone? Can I ask why 48,000? Is it because that's the minimum points value that it will let you go to? Or am I completely missing something here about optimal points values to use here?

Again, sorry for the newbie question - using ASAs is not something I have often had to do!

Quoting serfty on post #1753 on page 176 of this same thread:
"The minumum points for a mASA are based on Orgin-Destination Great Circle Distance., while classics are based on total segment distance."

A classic award on MEL-ASP-MEL (direct) will cost you 48,000 points. A JASA therefore allows you to book for the same 48,000 point minimum even though you can route via ADL or SYD.

Oh wow, totally missed that, I guess my eyes were bleeding after about 150 pages of replies haha... cheers!

Not sure if I'm misunderstanding, but I've booked (for example) HKG-SYD in F and SYD-ADL in J on the same PNR.

What you've got is an F fare with no F available SYD-ADL. This would be the same if you'd bought a first fare HKG-ADL, you just end up in J due to it being the highest cabin available.

I think I recall reading something on this subject but now can't find it. I'm looking to do a CNS-CBR J MASA. Can I go CNS-BNE-SYD-CBR which is available as a classic award, or will I be pointed to CNS-SYD-CBR or, even worse for SC earn, CNS-BNE-CBR both of which are also available as classic awards? I guess i could ask QF but I'd rather ring forearmed.

You're like to be charged (pts & $) for separate sectors as more direct flights are available 'commercial fare rules'.

Exceptions do exist but the norm is as above.

Good luck

Do tell us your experience though.

Expert Flyer says CNS-SYD/MEL/BNE-CBR, so it looks like you only get two legs.

In my first reply to my own thread (that got a bit bigger than I anticipated at the start) — just booked my first mixed ASA:

SYD–MEL (X class); MEL–CBR (U class); CBR–SYD (X class) for 32k + $272 to make up the 120SC (with DSC offer) that I need to make WP for the first time :)

Just to update this, they're now saying that it's not possible to have a mixed-class any seat award.

However, when I'm trying to book the U seat on QF63 SYD-JNB, it won't price. They can see the availablility of U, they can see that it's available as a classic award, but claim that the ASA fare hasn't been loaded in the system.

They've sent it off to helpdesk and put a hold on the U seat until Tuesday for me.

Is there anything more I should be doing from this end?

I encountered this issue as well beardoc, so would be interested to hear how you get on when you try again on Tue.

I rang up to book SCL - SYD in Z class (no U available). When they went to cost it, it was being costed as a Y flight, many calls later.... I'm told that the fares haven't been loaded into the system so the flight has been placed on hold for me so that I don't lose the seat, however I was told to ring back in a month when the fares would be loaded into the system. A month seemed like a long time to me. In the interim I have received email confirmation of the flight and have selected my seat in MMBs.

Thank-you I wasn't 100% sure if BNE was going to be similar to SYD
Whilst it may take a while on the phone, there is nothing wrong with ringing QF and asking them to price it for you for the dates you are looking at. And of course posting the result in the Reference thread to add to the knowledge bank.

Fare Information
I then put in CNS CBR on QF in Business (for just some random date)
It lists three options on the page that results... on the right-hand side there are three icons, the middle one looks like four dots connected with lines, that's the one you want.

I still don't know precisely what fare basis is relevant for cheap JASAs, but here all three give the same.

Just the pointer I needed, thanks.

Just booked a SYD-BNE-TSV return - 48k + $349.16 (consistent with spreadsheet).

but did have a few operator issues.

First operator could see the outgoing, but not the return.. so I didnt proceed.

Call back an hour late.
First operator couldn't see the outgoing,
but when I gave individual flight number she was able to do it by "stitching" the flights together.

Confirmed I wanted to do for minimum points and she confirmed the points and $s
Then something screwed up and she said ok - all done.
And I said -umm don't I have to give you my credit card details.

She went oh something has gone wrong, I ticked the box and said Amex...
10min on hold. still problems (and I had the last 'U' seat).

Reprocessed manually and called back with a different flight ref - but all appears good.

Just booked the following for a friend
Month booked | Month travelled | Cabin | Route | Points cost | Co-pay* | Classic co-pay~ | Max points cost~ | SCs earned
Dec 13 Jan 14 J SYD-BNE-TSV Ret 48K $349 ?? ?? 200 (400 as DSC)

I asked for U class and he merrilly went about making the booking, then came back with a quote of 51,500 points saying there was a 3,500 booking fee. When I queried this, he said he had booked the classic reward (in U!!). After some discussion, he came back with the 48,000 point ASA quote but said in future to ask for the Any Seat Rewards as Classics are booked in U.

Re: Sucessful ASA Bookings booked at classic rates Reference Guide

Quick question guys, can the Qantas voucher be used to pay the copayment and thus avoid the CC fee on a mASA?

Cheers,
Wayne

No. This has been answered a few times in the voucher thread.
