re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Have to give Cathy a bouquet of flowers !

Successfully booked a FASA today (only one left).

She put me on hold for 4-5 min and while waiting I saw, on refreshing the screen, that the seat had gone !

I was despaired thinking that "Oh No, someone had snatched that seat while Cathy is discussing how to book ASA with her friends"

My sanity was fully restored when she got back on line saying she had reserved that seat the moment I nominated it and 3 min later, I have a booking reference number in my MMB.

And, there is no (P) seat left for that flight.

Cathy, you are a gem !

PS: PM sent to Red Roo to compliment Cathy

Check to make sure you havn't ended up with a Classic award booking. Mine isn't fixed yet.

The prices matched known ASAs and each entry in my Activity Statement says "QANTAS & JETSTAR ANY SEAT AWARD 1 ADT", so it should be OK.

Yep, you had a good operator :) I thought I had one too. My points deduction and cash payment were the same as an ASA trip I had booked on a previous occasion, but ended up with a classic.

Anyone know if Red Roo works on a week-end?

I don't believe Red Roo would automatically check AFF on a weekend, so wait until Monday.

Sometimes they need a rest from all our queries

Tried to book Brisbane - Canberra via Melbourne. It is available as a classic award for 24 000 points. When I went to book they said it is 40 000 points. Is this correct? The operator checked with a supervisor and called me back and said it is 40 000.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Correct as there is direct routing between bne and cbr.

Why don't you do OOL-CBR via SYD/MEL? (I am not sure if it has changed but there used to be no direct OOL-CBR flight)

You can also do BNE-OOL via SYD.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Am I missing something?

I tried booking a “Classic Award booked as an Any Seat Award” ADL-BNE-TSV-BNE-ADL in J all the way and was told it would require 96k points + $1600?

Is there a trick to this?

I am trying to maximise my SC150 bonus to get close to Gold so didn't want to go economy anywhere.

The trick is to get a CSR that knows what they are doing or can follow their crib sheet. You have definitely been misunderstood/mis-quoted so I would just try again.

Not in much of a mood to do that, the first CSR hung up on me after I repeated my request twice.

That is a very poor response from QF. Did you get a name? Worth passing on to Red Roo.

Only ID is that the first CSR sounded Indian which threw me.

I tried telling the 2nd CSR that I thought the numbers were wrong and she tried some other things which made me think she knew what she was doing so I didn't suggest ROQ7740.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Just providing your QFF number should give Red Roo enough to follow up on.

It should be 48000 points + approx $360. Some CSRs don't have a clue; you can either coach them or give up and try again. Some people have more luck than others. I think overall it has improved over the last couple of months but it is still a bit hit and miss.

Oh and in my experience it is best avoiding the words "classic award." I find "any seat award in U class" works better.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

I'm new to this whole JASA thing after having not paid any attention to that column when it was previously on their website. I think I understand how they work but not sure if there are tricks needed to find them.

Is it just a matter of looking for classic awards for the available dates and routing, then calling them up and saying those magic words? Is there a necessary correlation between classic award availability and JASA availability, or does one simply possibly indicate the other may exist?

Take MEL-SYD-ASP return for example. According to the reference spreadsheet, it should be 48,000 points and $377. When searching for classic award availability, I came across MEL-SYD-ASP return available for 72k points. Are these the flights that I can book as a JASA for 48k + $377?

I can also see that when searching for classic awards, there is an option for MEL-SYD-ADL-ASP return at a cost of 72k points as well (i.e. same classic award cost as MEL-SYD-ASP return). Is it possible to book this as a JASA for 48k + $377 as well? The CSR on the phone said this would require 128k points + pay.

Let me know if this should be branched off into a separate thread. Thanks!

Classic Awards points are calculated per sector hence why the JASAs are lower when you route via an intermediate port. However, since they were removed off line, you can only get a JASA for less points than the equivalent Classic is when a direct routing does NOT exist. If the direct routing exists and you choose to go the long way round then yuo will pay the same points as a Classic.

Not necessarily. For example, CBR>SYD>ADL.

Edit: Sorry, I was referring to the fact that indirect routes are not necessarily priced by sector when a direct route exists... slightly different point.

Also, the example in #1541 (Brisbane - Canberra via Melbourne) was priced as two separate single-sector ASAs, whether correctly or otherwise. So actually worse than the classic.

This is my first post (however I'm a long time lurker). I just successfully made a mASA in J (U class) MEL>HKG>MEL for 120,000 points + a co-payment of ~$590. This will yield 360 status credits (240 + 120 from 50% bonus status credit offer). The CSR was very well versed in the process and had wrapped up the whole thing in just under 7 mins. (Although this is only my second JASA phone booking so perhaps I've just been lucky..)
