re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Is there any reference that says cancellation for a DOM MASA doesn't incur a penalty?

The fare rules do. You can ask the CSR to read these out to you at the time you book (or indeed after you book).

Are the fare rules in print anywhere we can read? At the time of booking I asked the CSR about the fare conditions. He said he had to check and then came back with a full cash and pts refund for cancellation, but a 5000 pt cancellation penalty. He seemed to be reading it, as he went on that Qantas would not refund more cash or points than had been used for the booking. Changes are FOC.

Have a look here

Clause 15.6

I always keep a copy of this handy in my PC

AFAIK - after some 7-8x post June MASA bookings (both DOM & INT) - there is never any condition put on the ticket in terms of cancellation fees.

15.6 Any Seat Award - tickets cancellation & refunds
15.6.1 A refund of an Any Seat Award will only be made in accordance with the applicable Fare Conditions and these Terms and Conditions, and the following provisions:
(a)
If a refund is requested prior to travel commencing, and the money paid to obtain the Any Seat Award is equal to or greater than the cancellation fee (or refund fee) specified in the Fare Conditions, and the original Any Seat Award booking was not made on jetstar.com, then the refund of the Any Seat Award will be made by re-crediting Points redeemed to the Member's account and refunding any money paid to the Member's Accepted Payment Card, less any applicable cancellation fee (or refund fee) set out in the Fare Conditions.
(b) If a refund is requested prior to travel commencing, and the money paid to obtain the Any Seat Award is less than the cancellation fee (or refund fee) specified in the Fare Conditions, and the original Any Seat Award booking was not made on jetstar.com, then the refund of the Any Seat Award will be made by re-crediting only the Refundable Proportion of Points redeemed to the Member's account and refunding only the Refundable Proportion of the money paid to the Member's Accepted Payment Card.
(c) If a refund is requested after travel has commenced, and the original Any Seat Award booking was not made on jetstar.com, then the refund of the Any Seat Award will be made by re-crediting only the Refundable Proportion of Points redeemed to the Member's account and refunding only the Refundable Proportion of the money paid to the Member's Accepted Payment Card.
(d) If the original Any Seat Award booking was made on jetstar.com and a refund is requested prior to any travel commencing, and the Fare Conditions state that the Any Seat Award is fully refundable, and the money paid to obtain the Any Seat Award is equal to or greater than the cancellation fee (or refund fee) specified in the Fare Conditions, then the refund of the Any Seat Award will be made by re-crediting Points redeemed to the Member's account and refunding any money paid to the Member's Accepted Payment Card, less any applicable cancellation fee (or refund fee) set out in the Fare Conditions.
(e) If the original Any Seat Award booking was made on jetstar.com and the Fare Conditions state that any part of the Any Seat Award is refundable, and paragraph (d) does not apply, then any applicable cancellation fee (or refund fee) must be paid with money as specified in the Fare Conditions and once paid the refund of the Any Seat Award will be made by re-crediting only the Unused Proportion of Points redeemed to the Member's account and refunding only the Unused Proportion of money paid to the Member's Accepted Payment Card.
(f) The 'Refundable Proportion' is the dollar value of the unused refundable portion of the Any Seat Award ticket or booking (allocated by Qantas based on the original fare or commercial ticket value as referred to in the Fare Conditions), less any applicable cancellation fee (or refund fee) set out in the Fare Conditions, expressed as a proportion of the original fare or commercial ticket value (as referred to in the Fare Conditions) of the Any Seat Award.
(g) The 'Unused Proportion' is the dollar value of the unused refundable portion of the Any Seat Award ticket or booking (allocated by Qantas based on the original fare or commercial ticket value as referred to in the Fare Conditions), expressed as a proportion of the original fare or commercial ticket value (as referred to in the Fare Conditions) of the Any Seat Award.
(h) Where applicable, only Points that would not have expired will be re-credited.
(i) Requests for refunds may only be made via telephone to Qantas Contact Centres or the Jetstar Contact Centre, as applicable - details are available on qantas.com and jetstar.com respectively.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Agent indicated no cancellations allowed and $280 AUD change fee for date changes. As I can't recall what they used to be, I have no way of checking if that is accurate.

By way of update..."U" class opened up on the day after my original flight, so I rang to see about upgrading. Michael helped out - didn't know how to process himself, but checked and came back and it was done in 5 minutes.

Change fee was only $100USD per ticket ($110AUD) not the $280 quoted at time of booking, suggesting that the terms applying to my "Z" class ASA were those for a Premium Economy Saver Bookings - Fare Types not a Premium Economy Sale as the $280AUD (approx $250USD) would have suggested.

In all, good result, ended up getting U class for an extra $378 pp including change fee.

Awesome! Imagine doing that again on a flight with an F cabin :p

I know...and there's no change fees now either - so I can change it over and over!

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Your CSR was incorrect!

In the last week, I had cancelled two INT MASA (booked post July 2013) and got full points and $$ back with no penalty whatsoever.

The points were then used to book better timed MASA flights.

True, I came across one indecisive CSR who muttered something 'I need to check'.....

I waited for 3 min and then HUACA, all was sweet afterwards.

I now know why the CSR said there is a 5000 pt penalty for cancellation.

Just looked at my activity statement to see the CSR booked me a Classic award. I'm quite annoyed as I distinctly said to him that I wanted an any seat award in uniform class, and his response was that I was one of those in the know. Now have to fix this.

I strongly suggest a PM to Red Roo is in order...

Hi rogerkambah,

Apologies for the inconvenience this has caused. If you could send me a private message with your frequent flyer number and the best phone number to contact you on, I'll arrange for someone to touch base with you.

Cheers,

Red Roo

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Phoned the 1300 number to book JASA (U class) ADL-BNE-TSV-BNE-ADL. Was quoted 72,000 points and $some each for 2 pax. I checked that the quote was for an ASA U class booking. Yes was his reply, and he knew all about ASA bookings and he wouldn't budge on his quote. I thanked him and said 'no'. I called back the next day and got the ASA booking at the correct/expected quote of 48,000 and $363.60 (plus $7 cc fee).Activity statement showed it to be and ASA booking.
After having taken the flight, my activity statement was credited as a Classic Award flight, ie zero points and zero SCs!!!
Phoned Qantas to ask for my points/SCs. It was agreed that it was booked as an ASA. The reason given why zero points were initially applied was that a "restriction code was applied that prevented points/SCs being credited. The award section knows of a bug in the system and it is still to be fixed". My points (base/cabin/status) and SCs/DSCs were credited while I was on the phone without any problem once the booking was verified.
HENCE, while this known software problem exists, it pays to check that any ASA flights have points/SCs correctly applied.

Agreed, also stated in my PM to Red Roo.

In all seriousness good luck with it and hope that it gets fixed up quickly.

Have to give the Red Roo's a pat on the back as they seem to get things fixed pretty damn quick when things like this happen.

Haven't heard from one of Red Roo's minnions yet, and it's been around 3 hours since I sent a PM. Now I'm wondering whether the PM was sent and have asked admin if they can restore a copy to my sent mail. Didn't tic the box asking for a copy to be placed in my sent box, as in my normal email this is the default. :(

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

So I just booked four JASAs, three separate calls. I always start out by saying that I want to book an Any Seat Award in the U fare bucket.

(1) Super efficient, done in no time.

(2) I completed my spiel, and the CSR said the word "marginal", which was a first for me. Less confident than (1), but got the job done. This was the only time I was put on hold to "check the points". I then asked for a repeat of the same booking two weeks later, and it went as smoothly as a really really smooth thing.

(3) Also very efficient.
