Greta Thunberg speech

No the threats of climate change have been grossly exaggerated and are not proven science.
people are more likely to die in cold weather than hot weather. Two observational studies published in the Lancet show more people die on days that are 5C below the average than days 5C above the average. And that holds wherever in the world you live.Even in Bangkok and Rio.

There is little evidence of mass extinctions.Extinctions generally are due to habitat reduction.

There is no evidence of an increase in extreme weather events-cyclones(hurricanes and typhoons) Severe storms.fire and flooding events.Droughts are more prevalent in some areas and less in others.
Deaths from extreme weather events has dropped 99% in the last 100 years.

The planet has greened significantly since CO2 began increasing.Indeed before the Industrial revolution the world was heading to levels of CO2 that were incompatible with life.

The GBR is not dying because of Climate Change.Corals grow faster in warmer waters. The reefs with the most coral species are around the equator.Nutrient run off is a more serious problem

Combating Climate Change with wind and solar is crazy.Just look at Germany and California.electricity costs are way higher than neighbouring countries and emissions are going up.This was predicted by electrical engineers many years ago with 40% being about the maximum before serious problems.
The countries with lower power costs and low emissions are those with low emission base load electricity generation.basically hydro and nuclear.

As to melting ice it has been melting for 20000 years.Indeed then Manhattan was under anywhere from 700 metre to 3 Km of ice.It began melting there 16000 years ago.
Recent evidence has shown that the Arctic ocean temperature doesn't fall any further when you pass ~1000 metres.IE there must be a heat source below the water.

Now if we put the money we are wasting with further renewable madness into R&D to find new technology to combat changes we would be in a much better place and there would be little reason for any child to be anxious.

And let me guess. CO2 is plant food?

And to sum up the thread and MOST of the contributors ..... what a surprise that certain sections of the community (sic) would rather attack a 16-year-old girl than climate change.

One of them did me more harm than the other. ;) (I spilled my G&T listening to the tripe at the UN)

She represents the voters of the future, who are equally as angry. She doesn't respect all these old men in power so I guess she doesn't give a damn what they think.

Meanwhile, Trump is experiencing "the worst witch hunt in history." Obviously, all those dead women who were burnt alive as witches don't count. Same as young people's views don't count apparently. The constant lecture on climate change on here in general is as tedious as ever.

Do a cost/benefit Greta. Do you think that speech, that temper tantrum ... and your face-pulling etc afterwards ... helped your cause? Did it convince anyone on the 'other' side to change their mind? USA? China? Or did the infantile antics and exaggerated hyperbole just antagonise them?

If not, then you've damaged your cause. If you want to play in the adult sphere, act like an adult.

But that's OK, I'm sure the book will sell well and you'll get a Nobel Prize. That'll help.

No, she represents only herself and her backers. And in going about it the way she did, I guess the feeling from the 'old men' (sexist, no?) will be mutual. Which goes to my first point - was this an exercise in trying to win over those who she thinks aren't doing enough, or was it just an emotional venting?

She had the world stage - and we got a temper tantrum. I'm just another old guy, but in my experience that rarely works in winning an argument and instigating 'real change'. Buy hey, I'm over 16 and male - what would I know?

Okay, time for everybody to put away their handbags/manbags and get some work done (or for those retired or semi-retired, or on holidays, go and play with your kids or grand-kids). This subject matter really has little to do with frequent flying et al...and these off-topic subjects soak up massive (volunteer) Moderator time. I'm surprised we allow some of these topics at times ....

Well it depends which old men you’re talking about, Trump, Morrison, Johnson, Ballsinaro, etc etc. Reality. Not sexist. Unlike the Prime Minister of New Zealand. Who is not an old man.

I agree. This is a silly thread. And repetitive we’ve had it all before.

Yes - I noted that. It was the text at the bottom of a post that did nothing BUT attack her, and her parents, and anyone that backs her ... in fact anyone who believes we should be doing a whole lot more to address climate change than we are.

That contradiction puzzled me for a microsecond [I'm not as sharp as I used to be], before I decided that the obvious answer was also the correct one.

So I see you use the typical warmist tactiic.A smart comment but no attempt to refute the arguments.
But indeed if the fact that the planet has greened over the last 30 years and crop yields and food production has increased it does indeed seem CO2 is plant food.

here is a graph to ponder-from James Hansen who first testified to the US congress in 1986 that the planet was warming. It is using Nasa data which is where he worked.

But something happened in the 36 years until 2017.Here is that years past temperature record.

As it happens the 0.8C rise in temperature since 1880 is precisely the same as the graph of the anomalies used to draw that red graph.
Besides that the temperature anomalies have been changed 3 times since the 1980s.on each occasion making the pre 1950 temperatures lower. If NASA had stuck with the original anomalies the temperature rise since 1880 would be 0.4C.

This. So many grown coughd adults coming out and abusing a kid because they dont agree with her. At least she used her grown up words to express how upset she is, unlike quite a few adults that have made very inappropriate comments in the news, on social media ect about/to her. Many wishing violence towards her. What is so threatening about a kid that adults have reacted so badly towards her.

History has shown that its the youth that has stood a hard line to make social changes.

As requested I am not going to reply further.
However I did want to emphasise that this thread was not about whether the climate is changing, and I have not set out to prove that it is.
I cited enough evidence to show that concern about climate change is not irrational.
I stated explicitly that whether you agree or not is not the point.
The point is Greta should not be dismissed as irrational because her arguments - right or wrong - are rational and based on empirical evidence.
Evidence which has convinced the vast majority of scientists with qualifications in the relevant areas.

Hey Denali
Certainly don't agree with anyone taking aim at this child.
My main point of the thread was to gain opinion on the validity of her speech and the situation she has been put in which is prone to trolling and haters.
Your comment goes to the heart of the debate:
"At least she used her grown up words to express how upset she is,"
- As it seems by all accounts that they are not her words but those scripted by others.

Actually the hate rhetoric is so familiar to me - I was an anti-Vietnam war protester, marched in the various moratoria and was told by my lecturers in Vet Sci (one of whom had a son at Duntroon) that I was too young to understand the Domino theory and yellow peril and that I should concentrate on my studies as I'd never amount to much ("and your pass mark will be 75% mr coriander") and leave running the country to the adults...... like Billy McMahon :):)
That ended well, didn't it?

Sixteen is year 10.
I remember being blown away by the maturity and strength of arguments in reading my kids' essays of the time, listening to their debates and thinking "I couldn't write like that when I was 16..." (but I could read, write, speak Latin and Ancient Greek :). That was useful going forward. Actually hysteria........ comes from the Greek word for uterus).
