Although saying that the Americans did try to introduce a simplified spelling. Some changes made it into common usage, others did not.

I'm sure the spell checker on this website uses American English. For example it does not recognise the word 'cheque'. And tries to change an 's' into a 'z'!

You've got to remember that English developed from two routes, Anglo Saxon and Romance (Roman, French). For many situations you can use more than one word based on the different routes. At one time using a Romance based word was considered more acceptable (posh) than the Anglo Saxon equivalent.

Well hullo Seed Knee, how about some feesh and cheeps!. ( I'm from NZ). Let's not not go much further. I can give you some town names whose pronunciation bears little resemblance to the spelling.
