Are there any other weirdos like me out there who actually waste time surfing google earth looking at airports / military bases and the like? I must admit I have been known to do it occasionally?

Some things I found interesting other than trying to spot Qantas aircraft at LHR (check out the concordes at the gate) , LAX (a colourful and familiar Qantas aircraft) and the like

1. Davis Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona (Amazing even from satellite view)

2. Area 51 (because you are not supposed to see it)

3. Generally cruisng around airfields looking at aircraft.

Weird hey!

Don't you need a full subscription to be able to surf current images? I am happy with the free 3 year old image provided.

I don't look at airports but I do regularly look at my house, golf course where I play every Saturday and my regular holiday destination. I have tried some of the stored locations on google earth but I think some of the suggestions you made would be worth the look. Thanks for the reminder.

My wife was showing me our house on Google Earth a few days ago. It's a fun piece of software.

I don't know if I'd look at military bases because I'd be concerned someone would think I was working with that guy Al Kyder. :D

Sadly you need XP or better to use google earth :(

My work is still stuck on NT and I only have 98 available at home (installed XP, but it killed my 550mhz PC so I backed out).

You could always try Google Maps

It has street level mapping both through Satellite as well as a street directory type map.

Yes I have used Google Earth to check out airports including Lax and home airport Bne.
Have also used it like others here to check out my home.
I have also used it to see how close to the beach my hotel in Santa Monica really was.
Really amazing program and addictive

Could you please supply the coordinates or someway of finding these destinations. I always spend ages looking for something and I can't it!

Wikimapia uses the same photographs and is not only searchable, but addable. Here is Davis-Monthan and Area 51.
And yes, it's an amazing time-sink.

i reckon GEarth is brilliant ... whenever i am going somewhere new i look it up and plot the route that i will take to hotel, work etc and then when i get there it's cool to spot the things that i saw on GEarth

Here's an extremely relevent use of Google Earth/Maps (for AFF/FTers): openATC

openATC (Open Air Traffic Control) is a worldwide network of ADS-B receiver stations, permitting anyone to see where airplanes were located 5 minutes ago. Look at it as Air Traffic gone Open Source!
This system can be used to visualize both in 2D and 3D the flight paths of any flight we ever recorded. Applications range from flight training to air traffic control training, positional awareness for dispatchers and last but not least, the enthusiast that wants to track flights.
Currently, it's mainly UK and SE Oz ...

(Yes, I have now upgraded to XP)

I jumped back on GE yesterday after rading this thread and saw that the pics of Cyprus (where my parents & sister live) were greatly improved :)

i came across this site:

Flood Maps

which looks like its based on google earth, but it shows the impact of rising sea levels ... i know its a bit off topic, but was very interesting to check out your city...

btw Skyring, thanks for those links to wikimapia - those pics are great ...

Thanks! I like the way that I can add to the site, identifying landmarks, making notes about hostels I've staid at, and generally sharing the experience.

I'd really love to have it available as I fly, so I can look out the window and match up what I'm seeing with names. That map display they have on seatback units is all very well, but if they could load up Google Earth and show the current position, that'd be awesome.

I wonder how well the inflight internet access on SQ would cope with Google Earth (Now there is something QF need asap - well for me at least)

If you cached the images, after a while it wouldn't need much internet access at all. Not sure how much storage THAT would need, but.

Seriously, Google Earth is a great time-waster. I often find myself taking virtual tours of places I've been or would like to go, and looking up an hour or so later wondering where the time went. Longhaul flights have time to spare, and I usually find towards the end of a round the world trip that I've pretty much seen all the movies available, heard all the good music, laughed at all the comedy, and read all my books.
