They never existed to begin with, save for the (one-off) bonus upgrade that was shipped out to anyone with a Gold or Platinum shiny card.

As notzac mentioned, Gold never had them. All Golds and Platinums got a "bonus complimentary upgrade" (which was equivalent to a complimentary upgrade for Platinums) that expired in the August just passed.
 
Is the general consensus this was just a once off for Gold members last year?

Apologies if questions seem stupid but I have not been following Virgin for a while.

I believe the general consensus was for once off. Had we all received another one this year, might have been a different case.

Certainly, complimentary upgrades are not a Gold gazetted benefit.
