Gifts for cabin crew

Just got off a Qatar flight Mel-Doh and gave the crew member looking after us in Business a clip-on Koala. Waited until half an hour before landing.
She was so appreciative she shed a few tears.

Someone on here suggested the koalas, can’t remember who, but thanks.
Bought a pack of 20.

I gift all Crews on SQ flts - I also gift every Lounge Staff Member a Cadbury or whatever 180gm Chocolate at SKL MEL or SYD or ADL wherever I am departing from - I also gift Chocolates t6o SQ MEL Station Staff of which there are 22 members last count - is that what you were after?

I guess there aren’t a lot of other service-industry jobs where the person doing the serving is providing service to the same people for such a long period of time … such that a gift of something that can be shared can be consumed. Plus on long-haul, really good service does still allow down-time for cabin crew, they can keep an eye out for those few of us who can’t sleep but that’s a minority & the rest of the passengers don’t want to be disturbed by attentive cabin crew …

My mechanic gets a little giftie of choccies ‘cos both our cars come up for rego in late December.

Teachers often get a small gift from some students at the end of the year.
We also have a lovely parent or community member who occasionally, anonymously, sets up free coffees for school staff at the coffee cart across the road. Always greatly appreciated!

My wife gave one of those 'clip on koalas' to an pharmacist in Germany who had gone out of his way to be helpful to us. I must admit that he was more pleased about it than I thought likely. She wife handed out most of the rest at the family reunion we attended and again most people seemed very pleased to receive them.

We use them often, they are always a hit no matter which country we are in...

I remember back in the 90s newlyweds on our SYD-LAX flight (with matching "Bride" and "Groom" baseball caps) pulling out a big container of their wedding cake (mudcake of course, it was the 90s) and sharing with the crew and nearby pax.

I think the gifting idea is to give them something pleasant though...not Fruchocs

I like the idea that you’d give the crew a thrill because pretty much nobody does it … but on the flipside, I’d be feeling a tad unsure about it being considered to maybe be a bit creepy, “what special treatment does he think he’s going to get?”.

That's me, too.

I really want to do this but feel really uncomfortable and just not sure why. I think it's because you do get the odd sneering FA and I don't want them to be condescending.

OK, so its going to be a little box of Tasmanian D'Anvers truffles for domestic crew who provide nice, pleasant experience, but popped onto the tray when they pick it up after meal or on 'rubbish collection', and Koalas etc for international crew ... maybe some truffles too (but significant risk of them not, er, lasting till the end of meal service). @Cruiser Elite those tags are sensational. If you ever find a source, or similar again, can you let me know, pls?

I used to do this on RTW work jobs. I didn't give them to flight crew, but kids and clients who helped us out on the film shoots we were doing. They always went down well.

I'm aware of people having done this for years but have not done so myself, only because I would probably feel a little uncomfortable doing so (like I'm trying to bribe for better service). Have a trip next month, will consider doing it then.

Anyone know how many crew look after the J cabins on Boeing 777-300ER and Airbus A380-800? (@Cruiser Elite ) I've decided to swap out the boxes of After Eights for hand wrapped and decorated individual mini chocolate blocks and would like to have enough for one per J crew member.

Before Covid Crew totals were 777 16 - old 380 25 / new 380 26 - but post Covid pretty sure they have dropped 1 off each - individual cabin numbers I do not know except F has 2 + IFM / R has 3 + IFM - I will check with IFM on 228 Tuesday and get specifics for all and post here - 350 I do not know but will check also

Encouraged by that experience I will continue to gift consumables to the flight crew on all but JAL flights (culturally not appropriate) and may even include a little hand made card from now on. I have two boxes of After Eights ready to hand over on my upcoming SIN flights.

What would be appropriate and appreciated by the Japanese crews? How about other East Asian crews?

I’m not so well travelled and read this article with interest as I came across an instagram reel recently where someone said their mum always gifted the attendants with chocolate.
I’m almost at the end of a wonderful OWA in business class (first time ever and enormous thanks to the great forum members for their selfless sharing ) and though I’ve never thought to give gifts, I notice that my verbal acknowledgmental of gratitude / words of praise for great service upon disembarking are met with such appreciation , they are so touched and thrilled.

I think appreciation must always be acknowledged in whatever way we can.

I gave chocolates to a Japanese crew once. They were quite embarrassed as they had nothing to return the gift with. My stupid fault for not appreciating their cultural norms. So please do not give anything to the Japanese crews as it only causes discomfort.
