Hey all, just a question I've been wondering and a bit of backstory.

A buddy of mine is getting married in upstate NY. To leave I was looking at flights from Albany to Denver. The cheapest flight that came up had a layover in Minneapolis. I've got some friends in Minneapolis that I haven't seen in a while and seemed a shame to be transiting through without being able to stop. I priced out everything, every single combination trying to find the magical one that would grant me a night or two "stopover" in Minneapolis.

Basically I've found this, if I want a stopover I have to book two separate tickets which greatly INCREASES the cost, as in $250 up to $600.

Ultimately my question is, if I book the full trip from ALB to DEN with a layover in MSP can I opt to get off in MSP when I check in ALB and then buy a cheap Frontier ticket to Denver when I want? Or will Delta, the airline I'm flying, force me to continue my journey the whole way? Failing that, I guess my layover is only 50 mins, I could always dawdle or pray for a delay?

What you are talking about is hidden city ticketing, its fairly normal for the airline not to care if you jump ship in most cases, of course checked baggage might be an issue. You can always ask for the baggage not to be checked through. However most airlines have a provision in their terms etc that allow them to recalc the fare, in reality they rarely do.

And make sure you don't have any further travel on that ticket. Once you leave the plane it is a courtesy to go to the desk and say something along the lines of 'I've just been advised I cannot continue and will not be boarding the next leg'. This stops them searching for you and possibly delaying the flight.

Markis10 mentioned luggage, hopefully you're able to travel with HLO.

Yeah we will have checked luggage. But I reckon we could go a day without it, depending if it will stay at our destination?

I would assume if you have checked bags and jumped ship then your luggage would be off-loaded if you didn't re-board

Not necessarily on US domestic flights. Another member on here recently missed his connection in ATL (inbound flight delayed due to WX) and DL had already loaded his bag onto the connecting flight while he was stuck in ATL overnight.

Not necessarily anywhere, it's quite common for a bag that's done one trip to travel on different flights to its owner.
