Hi,

I can't believe I'm doing this! After luck having gone my way and managed to snag a first class award flight from Melbourne to LAX finances just don't permit the whole trip - basically Hawaii with a conference that was on is just too expensive for the standard of accommodation that we want right now and the conference itself has received some bad reviews in relation to my field of interest. We are going to put off the trip until the following year.

Now, there is no guarantee the flights will go back into award inventory, but this is how I got them in the first place. The flights are on 15 May 2014 from Mel to Lax for 2 people in first class.

Please get in touch with me and we can arrange when I will cancel the flights. You would then just have to monitor the award availability and hope they come back online.

I thought it would be a nice Christmas present to let a member of the forum get the flights again hopefully.

The forum has given me great help and advice so this is the least I can do.

Just a shame for the 10000 point penalty but can't be helped.

Thanks,

Dale.

Nice idea Dale. Not for me, but hopefully will be a good time for someone else.

Hi,

Well no-one got in touch so I have cancelled the flights now. Within about half an hour they are now back online for redemption.

Get in fast if you want them.

Dale.

Hi Dale,

out of interest......as I have never looked at award flights like the one you mention.....
how many points is it?

thanks

TQ

you know, it's sitting there waiting to be picked. Pity as I'm already going to the states in May/June.

Mel-LAX, one way, one person - 144,000 points for first class.

I may have to cancel my cherished Nov FASA (MEL LAX) as there is one OPM* offer in the pipeline - in J only !!!! [talk about first world issues].

Now, I have to fret about an upgrade from J.

Will also alert AFFers once that is confirmed.

* OPM: other people's money

144000 per person each way. Good value I think points wise but you pay about $500 in taxes and fuel fees also.

Dale.

ASA cancellation would be free IIRC.

I am not very up with ASA's. I thought they had become less worthwhile.

Can you explain how they work?

My next trip is likely to be an Emirates first class booking (they seem to be returning to award availability at short notice again).

Do you have to book over phone or online?

Thanks,
Dale.

You can't do ASAs with Emirates, only Qantas & Jetstar metal and code.

I'm not sure what you mean by "less worthwhile" but even after the booking engine changes in June, they still earn SCs and points.
MEL-LAX in F earns 270 SCs and a minimum of 15,846 (7,923 base + 7,923 F cabin bonus) points - more if you have status.

Following the change, you have to book them on the phone. See here:

http://www.australianfrequentflyer....essful-asa-bookings-booked-classic-53677.html

There is a ton of info on ASAs on this site (at "classic award prices" to be precise, because in theory you can book an ASA in the highest and most expensive fare bucket), ie:

...and to a lesser extent here:

iirc, international ASAs do not have the same refund/change fees/situation as classic awards.

Hence I have booked classics while I'm gonna be in USA next year (everything is just very unknown for me at this point)

Will try and get back to Qantas Pratnum with F flying throughout LOTFAP

There is a post in thread frugal premium cabin flying ..... lhr to Mel 17 June 2015 x 2 in P.....I hope someone can put it to good use the OP is releasing tomorrow

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Oh, of course: Classic. Thanks, PF.
I've never used a Classic, in all my years of travel, so always connect P Class with ASAs. For one giddy moment, thought that there may have been an unguarded entry point still available. Sigh.
Great while it lasted, though.
Thanks again for the clarification. Hopefully, someone can snap up the seats - if they haven't already done so.
