What can you say to a comment like this?
Johnk, Mate - I probably haven't seen you and you probably haven't seen me and I fear we share the same frame, with me a little taller and also with an obvious disability so cool down eh?
My comment about anorexics was a joke Joyce, so don't bite so hard.

As a paying passenger, I do not think I should compensate overweight people. The weight of a person and their baggage directly impacts on the large fuel cost of a flight. Living in a market economy, the fairest way would be to weight each person at checkin and then each person should pay a per kg charge if over a certain weight. But this would be politically incorrect.

OMG – I can’t believe you have the audacity to say this type of cough! I hope you go to the hell of frequent flyers – a narrow seat with lumps, fat people either side of you and kids kicking the back of your seat for eternity…

Or better still, let me know your next flight number and seat allocation, and I will sit next to you and I’m sure there will be others here happy to sit on the other side…

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

As much as I dont want to be squeezed by a larger person I think its a little bit much to seize on that as a justification for charging multiple seats. What about the drinkers on the plane - the repeated calls for beer from my seat probably cost as much as the extra fuel from a more generously proportioned person. What about people with kids that require more attention from the FAs - should they pay more? Thinking about - people who watch IFE use more power than people who dont. Hmm and recliners are pretty obnoxious - so maybe when people book their flights they should declare the reclining preferences and be charged more (i.e. need to book a free seat behind them for reclining).

Seriously it all comes (as with the QP thread a while ago) to attitude. I would rather have a larger person next to me who leans away from me than a skinny person who is constantly reching over me, talking to their friend, trying to engage me in conversation.

Its a fact of life that you will either get stuck next to a fat person, smelly person, booze hound, frequent pee-er, WP who didnt get their special seat and will let you know about it, vegetarian who likes to tell you "whats really in the chicken salad" or at worst a FFer who will tell you that you should have really used the QP check in at Auckland as that would have saved you the 45 min immigration queue....

It would be nice if all of us would make an effort to make other people's flights a little more pleasant

have we sat together? oops

It's nice to know that not all FFers are narrow-minded. It made me so angry to read some of the responses here that I had to join up and throw my two cents worth in.

As for starving myself to get thin - absolutely. I've found that I can lose weight on 800 kilojoules a day and maintain my weight on 1000 kilojoules a day. That's about two Tim Tams a day. I start eating again - I get fat.

I've been trying to bite my tongue because this thread is degenerating by the hour, but I fail ....

A well known medico responded to that general (and more and more widely expressed) comment recently this way:

It is curious there were no persons with "genetic dispositions to be overweight" that were liberated after a few years in Belsen, Auschwitz, Changi etc. There were NONE.

Curious how a meagre minus diet managed to suppress that alleged gene.

Yeah - my grandfather was captured at Singapore and spent the entire war at Changi. He would have been your perfect passenger, ozstamps, as he was less than 40kg when released. Of course 90% of the other fatties didn't survive the diet, but nevermind.

Funny how many people choose to be fat these days, what with the known health issues and hate-mail it generates. I am probably 5-10kg overweight and would rather not be, so I try to run/cycle a couple of times a week and reduce my dietary intake. I know it is a bit of an excuse, but I find this difficult due to a busy sedentary career and having a couple of young kids to organise. I am lucky that I have no medical or genetic factors against me, and my middle-class background meant that I had good nutritious food whilst growing up. Some people are not so lucky so I sympathise with those that struggle to reverse the damage. Our society sends very confusing messages about eating - bombarding us with fast food ads from a very young age and then telling us we shouldn't eat so much when we get older.

But could I contrast this with another major health issue - smoking. The evidence has been clear for quite some time that smoking is bad for your health in countless ways and will probably lead to an early and uncomfortable death. The only ads being shown (in this country at least) are graphically anti-smoking, and there are ever stricter laws about smoking in public areas.

And yet about 25% of the population choose to pursue this pointless, expensive habit. Unbelievable!

So lets say we change the "No smoking" sign in the cabin to "No smokers" and make them take the bus. We will be doing them a favour as they are obviously too weak to help themselves, and there will be heaps of room on the plane to spread out and enjoy some space.

Maybe ozstamps could be in charge of a Cancertreating Camp where those smokers caught out trying to sneak aboard could be interred until they are cleared of any serious smoking-related illness (say 5-10 years).

Then again, why doesn't a moderator step in and terminate this increasingly offensive thread? Or is it only risquè language that is not allowed on this forum?

Cheers,

Hopefully you mean calories (kilocalories to be more precise).

And to be perfectly OT, it's not just how much you eat... it's the balance of how much you eat, what you eat and how much you burn.

Obviously for those people who don't have specific medical conditions.

Um, I'm not sure how to break this to you, but 185 and 96kg is classified as overweight and is enough for you to be considered at increased risk of obesity related illnesses. Your BMI is 28, anything over 25 is considered overweight and anything over 29.9 is obese.
Um, no need to break it to me. I did say in my post that I could do with losing some weight. I do know what I look like in the mirror! ;) Despite what the BMI says, my height is such that I don't look overweight and I easily fit into an economy seat with space to spare. I blame the years I spent at the gym for giving me shoulders that don't conform to economy sized seats.

The question is though, would Yada Yada prefer a slightly wider seat on JQ? or slightly more leg space on DJ ? :D

Can only guess the answer ;)
I bet you guessed wrong! I'd prefer business class any day. However I refuse to pay the exorbitant fares QF charges domestically. I keep ponying up the fare for international J because it is competitive and it keeps my QP membership current. But I'm seriously considering dumping QF because other carriers have better service, are introducing better cabins, and they don't land their aircraft on golf courses !!! :D

For all you would be doctors on this forum, most of you have no absolutely no idea. I eat less than the average person yet I am classed as obese.
John, you don't even look overweight to me. The person I mentioned in my previous post eats less than me and still puts on weight. I'm no doctor but it is indisputable that many people are unable to stop weight gain without serious intervention, e.g. an operation.

ozstamps - no doubt if someone starves themself they will lose weight. However very few people have the willpower to starve themselves and keep doing their daily job, etc. :-|

Friends - some tolerance and understanding wouldn't go astray. I'm sure you wouldn't like to be talked about or treated this poorly.

Welcome to AFF jaX :)

There are many more reasons to join this forum than contribute to this thread :) For example take the fact that having read a lot of threads here that I am actually going to be able to see my nephew in Cyprus because of the number of additional oppotunities and tricks I have learned :)

Yes, it is getting out of hand. :(

I think all that needs to be said has been said.
Rather than deleting this thread, perhaps admin can lock it

I don't ( and I believe neither NM or Lindsay ) read every thread so may well miss things happening in threads.

There is a "report post" icon on each post and I recommend using this if a thread is thought to be going feral. This thread was reported as such today and so , as suggested, I am closing the thread
