General Medical issues thread

That's not going to happen anytime soon. Seriously.

For what it's worth physio has not mentioned giving golf a break. Far from it. Keep playing and keep moving joints were his words.

Knee still swollen quite badly. Now started clicking/ringing when I walk which is driving me nuts.
Somethings gotta give JohnK. Even elite athletes rest after injury ;)

Yes elite athletes rest after injury but some also play through with injections. In my situation we don't know what's wrong. Swelling on the knee but ultrasound and MRI clear.

Should I rest from golf for 6 weeks? 6 months? What if swelling doesn't go away? Keep resting or just give up golf altogether?

Apart from family, golf is the next most important thing in my life. The decision is not that simple. As long as I'm not causing more damage then the exercise is good for mind and body.

Use it or lose it, especially for joints.

Otoh, I have trained myself to embrace discomfort and pain.
This body has to jump a lot of hoops before it is allowed even one Nurofen

I'm a firm believer of use or lose it. Some here don't understand passion and stuborness.

A number of years ago an ex-jockey, now trainer, and decent golfer had at least 3 months off golf as they were suffering from tendonitis. I don't know how severe their tendonitis was to comment.

I've been suffering from tendonitis and bursitis for a long time. My fingers/wrists swell from arthritis? There are days I cannot hold the golf club but I'm still out there.

That is passion. Stubborness? I'm not giving up that easily. The day I can't walk is the day I'll consider having a break from golf.

Playing through injury by injection is something only professional athletes do when there is an absolute need.

Until you get a diagnosis you won’t know if you are doing more damage.

Lots of things have to be given up due to injury. MrP had to give up golf when a smashed elbow and joint replacement as a result of a work injury meant he can no longer roll his wrist. In his forties.

If you make the choice not to recover then you’ve got to put up with the consequences and there won’t be any miracle cures.

Of course exercise is essential to good health but it has to be one that works.

My physio has told me to rest at times and play through pain at others. It really is as simple as identifying the problem and then acting accordingly. Little point just cherry-picking the advice that appeals to you and ignoring the rest.

Agreed.
It is true that a bloody minded attitude towards physical debilitation can be counter productive.
Recovery following stress is essential to achieve best function.
Any decisions to crash or crash through are made with my antennae fully extended…...

Not making a choice not to recover. I'm making a choice to continue life as normal until we know more.

I've had left hip pain for a long time. Now knee pain/swelling and both ultrasound and MRI are clear. Perhaps some sort of soft tissue damage or more than likely an arthritic condition including pseudogout.

That is far different from what happened to MrP. For me diagnosis could take a long time. That's a long time to be sitting around waiting and stressing.

Though even more ;likely the diagnosis you already have.Different joints can be affected at different times.
But still would have been good to do a joint aspiration to be sure it is nothing different this time.I just worry that the doctor is thinking that because you already have one condition everything is blamed on that.

I agree with you and respect your opinion. I was in a rush the other day. I'm doing a bilateral hip x-ray in 2 weeks. If I still have swelling of the knee I'll push for your recommendation.

My bet is arthritic. Has caused soft tissue stiffness in the past.

Onco appointment today. Doctor says sorry and not due for another visit till January. Oh well got his prescription for his next Goserelin implant.

Fracture Clinic visit tomorrow, next week Cardiologist.

This whole viral/bacterial infection saga is weird.

Nephew gets sick, his mum gets sick, my daughter gets sick, grandma gets sick. Wife takes daughter to doctor and is told it's the common cold. Fair enough.

Wife gets sick but is more serious. Influenza symptoms. Whole body sore, runny nose, eyes sore, cough and headache. We went to hospital for different check up and after blood tests she is prescribed Amoxyl, Telfast and one other drug. She's still quite bad.

While we were there checked daughter as her cough is still quite bad and doctor informs daughter now has sinusitis as he saw discharge from nose to throat and prescribes liquid Amoxycillin for daughter @375mg/day for 1 week.

I've now picked it up from them the past few days but all I have is runny/stuffy nose and partially blocked ears with no other symptoms.

Are these all the same infection and the infection has affected each person differently? Really confusing.

Today I drove 40 minutes to my prosthodontist's clinic, laid back in his chair for two hours while he drilled away and prepared me for two crowns, then paid him $4750 after having my health insurance rebate deducted from his bill.

It was a great day, because that was the first day I've driven 40 minutes without it killing my back, since my back operation back in April.

This gives me great hope that I might actually be able to drive the hour and ten minutes to Tullamarine this Saturday, without it killing my back, as we make our way to Bali via Jetstar. I'll be taking plenty of painkillers for my back, just in case.
Regards,
Renato

You could have hopped to BKK and have your dental there and have enough left for a holiday?

Was that to go on a trial for a new drug for your father?
Hope he is at least comfortable and that the break heals. It seems it never stops at one thing.:(

Surely the 8hrs to Bali on JQ more of a concern than 70m to airport....????

I could have had the crowns done cheaper here at a regular dentist, but I pay for known superb quality.
Dentists in a foreign country are an unknown factors for me.
Plus my prosthodontist has a movie night each year at a really good movie theatre near his clinic, and we always get invited.

We have no idea how we'll go sitting that long on the flight (my wife has had a back operation too), but at least we'll be able to get up and walk up and down the aisle if we have to. And take painkillers.

But the drive has been worrying me for months, as I kept getting a very sore back after 30 minutes driving, and worse at 40 minutes - which is the longest I've driven since back in March. I'll pop a few Panadol Osteo for the drive, just to make sure.

Renato

Movie night? Go shout yourself a gold theatre ticket if that’s what’s keeping you seeing him.
